SPEZI trip 2010

UPDATED: Some preliminary details of the trip by luxury sleeper bus to the Special Bikes Show in Germany - NOW FULLY BOOKED

As mentioned in the latest magazine, from 23rd-26th April 2010 we're running another coach trip to the amazing SPEZI Special Bikes Show in Germany in late April 2010. This will be the third time we've done it, and I'm hoping it will be the smoothest-running yet!

SPEZI trip 2007

See the full photo report on last issue's trip here!

Last year's trip was very enjoyable and successful, and I'm planning to make this year's very similar indeed. I must admit though that in the rush up to Christmas I haven't yet confirmed all of the details: these will be finalised early in January. But basically, the trip will be as per last year:

http://www.velovision.co.uk/cgi-bin/show_comments.pl?storynum=969

We'll be staying again at the excellent Bellheim Tennis Club, with shower etc facilities on site and with breakfasts served each morning (optional, 5 Euros each IIRC, and plenty of it!). Where we park is a few miles away from the show venue, so you'll need to bring a bike, ideally a folding one (we may have some spares, or a few non-folders can be accommodated if necessary).

The only significant change may be to change the pickup point from near King's Cross station to somewhere like Upminster tube station, to avoid the bus getting caught in the Friday eveing London traffic. This should get us to the ferry a bit earlier and generally give a bit more time in hand, while still being convenient for most people to reach from or via central London. I'll take soundings about this from all who have expressed an interest when I get back in January, and also discuss with Chop our driver before making a decision. Let me know if you have any views...

I have also yet to finalise the cost per person of the trip but it will definitely be within 10% of last year's price, which was £275 per person. I just need an updated quote for the coach hire before I set the final price.

As I've run out of time before the Xmas break I'd best leave it there. Please do read the details of last year's trip before booking! But I've already had several emails asking how to book so without further ado here you go:

**Payment details removed as we're now fully booked - but do contact us to be put on the waiting list in case of cancellations!**

I'll be happy to give a full refund of these deposits until a few weeks before we travel, but do book early to get a space. We've been fully booked for each of the last two trips - there are just 17 beds on the bus!

  • Just been through the order list and it looks like I now have deposits for a total of eight places so far, so still another six to go!

  • From: peter on 6 January 2010
  • Two more places now taken :-)

  • And one more now in, so just three left...

  • Still two left, and Hardy the show organiser just emailed about an additional attraction:

\"By the way there will be a sightseeing Tour guided by an English lady on Sunday, 25 -04-2010 at 15.00 pm. Meeting point is before the main entrance and it will take about an hour to see the buildings of the old fortress in Germersheim. It's a really interesting tour!\"

Some basics about the fortress and town are here:

  • Quick further update:

We are definitely doing the Upminster rather than central London pick-up!

    Confirmed times:

    Friday 23rd April
14:00 Pickup Stansted Airport Coach Station
    14:40 Pickup Upminster Station

We will work out times for pickup from the Sudbury depot and/or from services along the M21 if anyone needs them...

That'll give us that few extra hours in hand...

On the way back (Monday 26th) we'll aim for 10:00 for Upminster and 10:40ish for Stansted... ferries and traffic do make precise timing a bit variable, so it could well be a bit earlier or later.

Will revamp this story to have all of the info more logically arranged shortly!

  • I had been thinking of coming up on my own to Germersheim. Alas, I have 300 & 400km audaxes on the weekends either side of SPEZI so I doubt I can get the time off. :-( Maybe in 2011 ...
