New hour records aplenty


Ladies' record broken twice and taken over 70km for first time, men's record up to over 84km...

After a weekend of speedbiking at the Opel test track in Dudenhofen near Frankfurt, Germany, the HPV Hour records have been comprehensively smashed (subject to official confirmation of course).

Sam Whittingham, riding a Varna speedbike, raised his own record from 83.7 to 84.215km.

Ellen van Vugt, the previous record-holder at 68.325km, broke through to 68.973km in the Whitehawk vehicle.

But just half an hour later Rosmarie Bühler of Switzerland came in with a remarkable 73.411km in the Varna Diablo II, taking the Ladies' record over 70km for the first time.

Previous record holder Lars Teutenberg was also racing, but after a strong attempt didn't break any previous records on this occasion.

For reference the UCI hour records are Chris Boardman's 56.375km 'best hour performance' or his 49.441km 'hour record' under more restrictive technology rules introduced in 2000. The UCI Ladies' record is I think Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli's 'absolute' 48.159km, but maybe that was at altitude. Maybe Yvonne McGregor's 47.411km is the official number, but I'm confused now.

    • Wow. 51.085 miles from a standing start (45.675 for Rosmarie). I searched Google news for more information on this, but not one word.

    • Just to clarify matters:

    The UCI Women's hour record is held by Leontien Zijlaard-van Moorsel (46.065kph) - I think this is the women's equivalent of the 'Athlete's Hour' record set by Chris Boardman. The *absolute* women's hour record (ie. before the UCI started moving the goalposts) is 48.159kph set by Jeannie Longo. Both records were set in Mexico City, which probably counts as 'at altitude'

    Last we heard, he had changed jobs 8 times in two years!
    BTW he is back writing for Radfahren.
