  • Does that front cover mean that Peter has lots of photos of people crossing Ouse Bridge on the York Rally cavalcade? "Hello, is that the Velovision photosales department?"

  • From: Tony Calvert (tc4558@hotmail.com) on 2 August 2006
  • B****r! Where's my appearance fee?

    Wot,no Ride Leicester?

  • From: Peter Eland (peter@velovision etc) on 2 August 2006
  • Sorry Andy, that was about the only one that turned out in focus from the bridge.

Sorry Tony, didn't know who you were! Hope you don't mind...

Grumpy: Ride Leicester is in the News section...

    Cheers!

    Peter

  • I'm intrigued by the blurry pedestrian in the background, who seems to be about to start limbo-ing.

  • From: Tony Calvert (Tourist Tony) (tc4558@hotmail.com) on 2 August 2006
  • So, Peter, the Velovision pub crawl had been THAT effective, then?

  • From: Peter (VV) on 2 August 2006
  • Probably a brain fried in a hot tent all day also didn't help... anyway that was badly phrased - I knew you were the chap I'd been speaking to in the pub and before, but couldn't for the life of me remember your name...

  • From: steve Green (@@@@@@@@@@@) on 2 August 2006
  • Arch, you do not have a clue: it's Fat Freddy Freak! Unfortunately, minus Franklin, Phineas and the cat.

  • From: Tony (tc4558@hotmail.com) on 2 August 2006
  • I have broad shoulders.....etc

  • From: andy scaife (still@odds) on 2 August 2006
  • course, you can tell the pic was taken on the rally, cos its the only time you'll see kids on decent bikes these days!

  • From: Arch (@KM) on 2 August 2006
  • Alas Steve, you are correct. I do not have a clue what you are on about...

  • From: ian (@ome) on 2 August 2006
  • I thought that was phineas minus the hair in the front. sorry Tony...

  • Arch, many years ago, when I were a lad, I could catch the bus to Wakefield, get roaring drunk with my mates, buy fish and chips on my way home, and still have change out of a pound.

Meanwhile, in America, a deeply troubled and very odd man called Robert Crumb, a cartoonist, invented a disfunctional and incompetent bunch of doped up hippies. They were the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers (Fat Freddy, Phineas and Franklin).

Alas, my explanation is almost certainly as little use as my original post! (But the University Library should be able to help with Robert Crumb: he is imagined to be Culturally Significant, apparently to his amusement!)

  • From: Arch (@KM) on 2 August 2006
  • Ah, having googled a bit, now I understand. I was (and still am) more of an Oliver Postgate kind of girl.

  • From: syd (lalalala) on 2 August 2006
  • Robert Crumb created Mr Natural and Fritz the Cat. Gilbert Shelton was responsible for The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers and Fat Freddy's Cat.... none of whom ever rode bicycles.

  • From: Tony (tc4558@hotmail.com) on 2 August 2006
  • But one of them WAS Freewheelin' Franklin!

  • From: syd (ridin'alongonmypushbikehoney) on 2 August 2006
  • Damn right. Now what was it he used to say... 'Dope will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no dope'. Not that such views have have any place in this clean living forum.

  • From: Simon Hartley (shartley@fish.co.uk) on 2 August 2006
  • We now have two front covers in a row featuring people on normal, upright bicycles. It's all very worrying. Let's at least have some of them with odd socks...

  • From: Simon Hartley (shartley@fish.co.uk) on 2 August 2006
  • Okay, so that fell flat on its face. If you want a discussion on the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, there was the time when a friend took a copy of the comic to a Christian retreat and accidentally left it behind. It almost got our church blacklisted. I think it was the issue where one of the brothers sleeps for longer than usual and the others think he's dead and bury him. In hindsight, I can see why they may not have found the burial service amusing.
Naff all to do with bikes, but hey.

  • From: Johan (jpt@ysbl.york.ac.uk) on 2 August 2006
  • Great mag again. My eight year old son falls asleep reading the mag in bed at night (I realise that statement could be interpreted in more than one way, but it really is a sign that he finds it interesting enough to choose it as bedtime reading!). Two comments: the capital 'IJ' in IJmuiden in your story about the cycling bridge is supposed to have both letters in capitals (the 'ij' comes in the alphabet under 'i' in Dutch, but is seen as one letter and has its own 'name'). And the Sinner Rapid (a trike with electric assist) is missing in the buyers guide about special needs cycling. As the proud and happy owner of a Sinner Demon I felt I needed to rectify that. Keep up the great work!

  • Another great issue, filled with interesting stuff but while coloured type and coloured backgrounds do make for instant eye appeal they don't make for easy reading. At least we are spared faux photo borders round the pictures and printing across the join as the ctc mag gives us.

  • From: Biclas (info@biclas.com) on 2 August 2006
  • Hi to all Folding Bikers! we have just started a company to represent Dahon in Portugal. Fell free to visit our site www.biclas.com and consider us on your next visit to Portugal. Maybe some day we can organize a folding bike travel probably in south of Portugal (Algarve) or Lisbon.
