News round-up part 1A possible Sturmey ASC revival, a recumbent rally in Pennsylvania USA, an AZUB pedalled back from Beijing, belt drive again, and Bath helmet/wig researcher gets a Greenspeed... Interested in a Sturmey fixed? Thanks to Robin Commander for forwarding this, originally posted on the rec.bicycles.tech and rec.bicycles.misc newsgroups by Sheldon Brown in late February: **** Subject: New Sturmey-Archer ASC Three Speed Fixed Hub? Reportedly, SunRace/Sturmey-Archer is considering doing a new production run of the ASC 3-speed fixed-gear hub, or an updated version of it. Given SunRace's track record with Sturmey-Archer, I would expect a new version to be more reliable than the original. They're not certain about how much demand there might be for it though. If this is something that would be of possible interest to you, let them know by sending an email to: info (at) sunraceusa.com Sheldon "I Love My 1954 ASC" Brown **** 2007 Pennsylvania Recumbent Rally Jeff Schroeffel writes to mention the Recumbent Bike and Trike Rally in State College, Pennsylvania, USA. This weekend event (15-17 June) includes tours "with rolling hills through beautiful Amish country" and recumbent activities including test rides and "a tune-up workshop and recumbent-specific tips". They expect 75-100 riders. Details here. AZUB back from Beijing Honza Gallo of recumbent makers AZUB writes: "We have been in contact with a Slovenian girl, Marija Kozin, who is now in Bejing (China). She has cycled solo from Slovenia to there on a classic touring bike: 17 000 km, and she has decided to cyle back by recumbent. We sent her a bike, an Azub 5 with some special equipment for long distance. Her website is: www.marijakozin.com" Well worth a look - the latest entry describes her experiences with the AZUB as she makes her way back through China and towards Tibet.- Ed A better belt drive? Thanks to Jonty Semper for forwarding this link to C-Drive - apparently a "a break-through in the evolution of the bicycle" but not as far as I can see very different from previous belt drives. Their FAQ page mentions "a patented belt and sprocket interface made to extremely close tolerance specifications". The site seems aimed at cycle manufacturers who might wish to build the system into new bikes. Helmet researcher gets a Greenspeed Readers may remember this research from Bath University in which Dr Ian Walker showed that "drivers pass closer when overtaking cyclists wearing helmets than when overtaking bare-headed cyclists, increasing the risk of a collision." Belatedly I can report that Australian recumbent makers Greenspeed have provided Dr Walker with a Greenspeed GT3 trike, presumably so that he can investigate how much space drivers give when overtaking a recumbent trike rider. It will be interesting to see whether the common perception among recumbent trike riders - that drivers leave more room when overtaking than they do for 'normal' bikes - is borne out by the research.
