Wakey wakey!

Cycling gets you going in the morning - it's official, plus an eclectic mix of cycling videos to enjoy.

Sue Archer writes:

Cycling - the most effective 'Wake-up call'
Most of us will already know it, but a study for The Cycle Show confirms that a twenty minute ride is the best way to wake up the body and brain before work. The study participants were put through a series of daily routine tasks, testing their ability to react to sudden occurances and carry out basic cognitive tasks. Cycling was compared to other common waking up routines including a full English breakfast, a cold shower and a cup of coffee. The cold shower or coffee resulted in intial alertness which dropped off quickly, whereas the cyclists stayed productive for longer, thanks to the natural high produced by exercise. The fry-up breakfast, predictably perhaps, simply induced sluggishness. The knowledge that cycle commuters are likely to be the most alert and productive members of staff in the morning could perhaps be the impetus for employers to encourage more people to cycle to work.

Video assortment
So, you've cycled to work and you're all set for the day. Here are some videos for those less busy moments...

Jason Patient sent us a link to this impressive display of bicycle gymnastics from Carla and Henriette Hochdorfer, with wheelies par excellence, and a number of different ways to carry a friend on your bike. The usual warnings about not trying this at home apply...

If those gymnastics are a bit beyond you, why not have a go at something a little more fast and furious with both wheels, and occasionally a foot, on the ground. Jonty Semper sent us this Cycle Speedway video:

The loose surface and tight turns make for exciting sport, and if you fancy having a go, the Horspath Hammers, 2009 British Champions, have practice sessions. If you're not in the Oxford area, many other local clubs welcome newcomers. Find your local club via the British Cycling website.

And now, as they say, for something completely different. Found on the Recumbent Gallery blog, this amphibious velomobile with electric assist. The video shows how it simply rides straight into the water, where the drive is provided by the little propellor behind the rear wheel.

As with many amphibious vehicles, the tricky part is the transition back from water to land, when wheels struggle to grip on slippery slopes. But there's no doubt it works well on land and in water, and looks very sleek.
