Amazing stuff for a ThursdayVintage Canberra collection for sale, Velorbis reveals new models, the hub-gear-drop-bar solution hits UK, velomobiles: single or double and pedalling the Pacific... Sue Archer writes: Canberra Bicycle Museum sale We reported back in 2008 that the Canberra Bicycle Museum was closing and that the collection was up for sale. Many bikes went to good homes, but nearly 150 remain to be sold and an updated catalogue has been compiled. You can see the original list on the Canberra Bicycle Museum website, where the new catalogue is soon to be uploaded (at time of writing), or you can request the list, without pictures, by emailing Annemarie Driver on oldbikesincanberra (at) gmail.com. Discounts may be given to anyone buying ten or more bikes, and some of the bikes will also be placed on Ebay in due course. Items still for sale include 19th century boneshakers, replica Penny Farthings and a Sinclair C5, plus the splendid 'Hen and chickens' pictured above. Velorbis unveils new models Danish manufacturer Velorbis have launched a new UK webpage where customers can now buy bikes or accessories online in the UK Web Store. Velorbis have also unveiled their new models for 2009/2010, including the limited edition Leikier inspired by 1950s motorbikes and the Mobii delta load-carrying trike. For those seeking something more classic, there are the Student and Studine models, simplified versions of Velorbis's top models, with prices starting at £475. STI hub gear shifting for drop bars News from BikeBiz that Sideways Cycles has acquired distribution rights in Europe for the Versa VRS-8 integrated brake and gear shifter, allowing Shimano Alfine and Nexus 8 speed hub gears to be fitted to bikes with drop bars, and take advantage of the benefits of STI (Shimano Total Integration) shifting - minimal clutter on the bars, less weight and little hand movement required. The levers will retail at £179 a pair. Other solutions to combining Shimano hub gears and drop bars are the bar-end shifters from Jtek Engineering we reported on here or the complete Synergy bike by Dynamic Bicycles, which featured the first incarnation of the Versa STI levers. Velomobile for one... Spotted on the Recumbent Gallery, a couple of velomobile prototypes from Polish builder Maciej Kaczmarek - one with a standard handlebar set up and one with steering wheel, both sleek looking with integrated lights. For non-Polish speakers, you can read a Google translation of the article mentioned (in almost English!) in PolskaLokalna, with some additional photos. ...or velomobile for two News from VeloKit of their first ever recumbent tandem fairing. The fabric fairing is fitted to a Terra Trike Tandem, is twelve feet (3.6m) long, and adds 26 pounds (11.8kg) to the weight of the trike. There are other tandem velomobiles around, including this Alleweder conversion, but the VeloKit is probably the only fairing that packs into the boot of a car... Pedalling the Pacific Greg Kolodziejzyk isn't content with breaking world records for distance travelled under human power, on both land and water, so his next project is to pedal across the Pacific Ocean from Canada to Hawaii. His boat, WiTHiN recently underwent sea trials around Vancouver Island and you can see video of the trips on the Adventures of Greg website. The voyage is due to start in July, and the final phase of preparations includes fitting desalinators, communication equipment and a seatbelt for rough weather!
