Debates and doodlesWheelchairs vs handcycles, Plan B for saving the world, Cycling the Six, York folding bike appetisers and computer doodling. Sue Archer writes: Wheelchairs versus handcycles Debate is raging over the issue of whether handcyclists should be allowed to compete in the London Marathon, according to this report in The Guardian. Handcycles are allowed to compete to some degree in four of the five major world marathons, but organisers of the London event reason that the greater speeds achievable by handcycles would be dangerous on a course run on relatively narrow streets. Handcyclists also have an advantage over wheelchair racers, because of their ability to use gears. London race director David Bedford points out that cyclists can't compete in the marathon, because it's a running race - all of us would probably agree that we'd find 26 miles much easier on a bike than on foot. PlanB: B is for Bike The Earth Policy Intsitute is dedicated to planning a sustainable future, and their president Lester Brown has written Plan B 4.0: Mobilizing to Save Civilisation, with the aim of achieving that future. Chapter 6 deals with the redesign of cities, and, most relevant to Velo Visionairies, the Return of Bicycles. Much of what he writes won't be news to Velo Vision readers, but the statistics and references may be useful to anyone trying to promote increased bike use. Cycling the Six 'The Six' in this case, being six continents - Europe, Africa, South America, North America, Australasia and Asia. Dr Steve Fabes will set off in January to Cycle the Six, in a circumnavigation he expects to take four and a half years. Along the way he'll be raising money for Merlin, who provide health care in times of crisis. Dr Fabes, who has a professional interest in tropical infections, will also witness firsthand the work of clinics treating such diseases. Although Steve hasn't turned a pedal yet, friend and travel journalist Henry Wismayer has penned some amusing little premonitions of each continent for the website. Folding weekend appetisers We mentioned Ken Davison's folding bike weekend in York next March here, and Jason Patient wrote to remind us that if you want to see the sort of fun you might have, you can see videos of last year's event, based in Newcastle, on Vimeo, here and here. Bike doodling Jonty Semper came across this page of ASCII bike art at the Cascade Bicycle Club website. For those not in the know, ASCII stands for "American Standard Code for Information Interchange", or in other words, letters and characters produced by computer. With a bit of forethought and clever spacing, quite intricate pictures are possible, and the collection features uprights, tandems, trailers, recumbents, mountain bikers and an impressive cityscape. Go on, have a go at designing your own... Posted on 10 December 2009
