Cycling from electric to sub-aqua...The latest news from ExtraEnergy, have your say on Segways, protect the postie's bikes, getting kids on their bikes, Reverse Gear news, and pedalling with the fishes. Sue Archer writes: ExtraEnergy rides into the year ahead The lastest newsletter from German electric bike promotion organisation ExtraEnergy details the organisation's plans for 2010 and you can read all about them here. With interest in electric bikes booming around the world, ExtraEngergy will be launching their own magazine, while continuing to arrange industry conferences, run independant tests of new models, and give potential buyers the chance to try bikes at major cycling trade shows. Sharing cyclepaths with Segways? News from BikeBiz that the Department for Transport are running consultations on a couple of electric and bike related issues. One is canvassing opinion on the rewriting of regulations governing electrically assisted pedal cycles, in order to bring British legislation in line with European standards - currently there is a discrepancy in the permitted maximum power for bicyles. The proposals and a response form can be downloaded from the Department for Transport. The second consultation regards the use of Electric Personal Vehicles like the Segway on public roads and cycletracks. Currently any EPV that doesn't comply with road vehicle legislation (this doesn't include mobility scooters which are permitted to use footpaths and roads) can only be used on private land. Once again, you can read the proposals, and give your feedback, via the DfT website. The closing date for both consultations is the 30th March. Protect the postbikes Spotted by our colleague Brian, this E-petition is calling on the Royal Mail to guarantee postmen the right to choose the bicycle option for delivery, in the face of a plan to phase out bikes in favour of vans. As the petitioners point out, delivery by bike is a long established tradition, and in the recent wintry British weather, often proved more practical than motorised transport. The second point of the petition is also worth supporting - an undertaking not to destroy any unwanted bikes, but to continue to donate them to charities such as Re-Cycle. Re-Cycle have already made good use of retired post bikes, as their Gallery shows. Getting kids in the saddle Next week will see the launch of a new initiative to help kids get the most out of cycling in the UK. Bike Club, a collaboration between CTC, Continyou and UKYouth, with initial funding from Cycling England. The club aims to support young people between the ages of 10 and 20 to use cycling as a way to improve their health and transport options, as well as learning new skills and discovering the freedom that cycling can bring them. The project will be launched in London on Monday 18th January and in Manchester on Thursday 21st January. Back-to-front jerseys News from Ligfiets.net that Hafa Ligfietsen have become dealers in Reverse Gear recumbent wear from Canada. Specifically designed for recumbent riders, Reverse Gear features front pockets on jerseys, and a more recumbent specific fit on shorts and trousers. Hafa say they have most of the clothing in stock and prices start from 59 Euros. Pedalling with the fishes Stephane Rousson sent us a link to his latest project, the Scubster, a human powered submarine which is expected to take part in the International Submarine Race, held every two years in Florida, with the next competition due in 2011. Roughly translated, the French website explains that Scubster is a 3.5m long yellow submarine, driven by human powered twin propellors. The objective is to attain a speed of at least 10Km/h, and to produce a highly manoeuvrable craft which will be faster than a normal diver, and can carry additional air bottles to provide greater range, making it a useful exploration tool for marine scientists. We've followed Stephane's attempts to cross the Channel in his Zeppy airship over the last few years and we'll keep you posted on his sub-aqua exploits! There are plenty of videos of previous sub races online - for example this one: Posted on 14 January 2010 Your comments ...
