Snow, trees and touring

Bigfish in the snow, bikes on trees and trees on bikes, and the ultimate family touring solutions...

Sue Archer writes:

A Bigfish out of water
With the UK blanketed by relatively unusual amounts of snow in the last few weeks, debates have raged over the benefits of two and four wheel drive vehicles, while those of us with one wheel drive quietly get on with the business of getting about. UK importer Robert Logie found that his Bigfish folding bike was quite capable of handling the conditions, and sent us a link to this video proving it:

Meanwhile, this thread on the Digital Photography Review forum shows that the Netherlands have also had the wintry weather, making for some very picturesque bicycle snaps, including an interesting bicycle 'tree'.

Bikes on trees...
Talking of bike trees, the Guardian bike blog recently covered this Japanese Bike Tree system (video), spotted for us by Jonathan Pattison, in which bikes are automatically stored on a giant underground rack. The video shows how the bikes are identified by a microchip and swipecard, and retrieved in 30 seconds. I could do with something similar to get my bikes up to my flat...

...and trees on bikes!
Meanwhile, Jason Patient spotted this news item on the Seattle Queen Anne blog. A convoy of cyclists with Christmas trees strapped to their bikes had locals thinking some kind of protest was taking place, but it turned out be the local .83 cycling club off to an impromptu bonfire. While many of us endeavour to be lit up like a proverbial Christmas Tree in the winter, perhaps towing the real thing would get us plenty of room!

Family touring in style
While many people with children assume a car is a must to transport all their paraphenalia, some prove that it doesn't have to be that way, even on a very extended trip. Brett Gilbert spotted a family of two adults and four children on tour in San Francisco, and thanks to being a long time subscriber to Velo Vision, was able to identify their Hase Pino and Trets set up. He got talking to them and discovered that they were a French family touring the Americas, who have a blog showing their set up, and just how much they can carry! The Antoine de Saint-Exupery quote translates as "Make your life a dream, and a dream, a reality."

Circle those wagons!
Meanwhile, if you fancy a taste of the Romany lifestyle, or a hint of the old Wild West, why not tour with your own wagon, as posted on the Velo Vision forum. Andre was bitten by the covered wagon bug in 2004 and has been using it on tour, since covering 4000km. Gunther dreamt of touring with a bike and caravan since he was a student, and built his wagon in three weekends of work, the finished item wieghing in at 55 kg unladen.

  • Bigfish goes anywhere! I might not have been out with that much snow but it still got me to the train and back!
