Fairings, folders, footwear and more...

Velokit goes delta-style, Arkel and Tout Terrain link up, Circe Cycles site goes live, tandem team pairing resource, folding forum relaunches, boosting bicycles in Beijing, fancy fixie footwear and New Yorker cover art.

Sue Archer writes:

Delta-style VeloKit

News from Krash at VeloKit that he recently made his first fairing for a delta layout trike. The kit was designed round a Sun USS trike, for a client with resticted mobility, so ease of access was important.

As well as VeloKit's first delta model, it's the first hardshell fairing produced, made from Coroplast with polycarbonate windows and aluminium supports. Like the other VeloKits, it breaks down for easy storage or transport.

As Krash gets access to more delta trikes to work round, the list of machines it fits will grow, and the price is expected to be under $1000.

Tout Terrain and Arkel get together
Canadian cycling luggage manufacturers Arkel have announced that German touring and town bike specialists Tout Terrain have become their distributors in Europe and the UK. Arkel's range includes specific panniers for tandems and recumbents, as well as regular panniers, bar bags and other accesories. Tout Terrain's touring products include the Panamerica and Silkroad bikes, and the Plug power supply device, for charging electronic gizmoes from a dynamo.

Circe Cycles up and pedalling
We've mentioned the Helios compact tandem in the magazine a number of times during its development and now the Circe Cycles website is live, with specifications for the various models and a dealer list. The basic Helios platform, with 20" wheels, is designed to provide easier transport and storage than a large wheeled tandem and has the ability to accommodate riders of many different heights, making it ideal for families. There's also the Brut 'longtail' cargo or child carrying option, which converts to a regular tandem with the addition of rear saddle and stoker bars.

There are derailleur or hub geared models, including the top of the range Rohloff equipped Aurora.

Cycling blind
On the subject of tandeming, we reported in this news story on the Blind Stokers Club, and now there's another resource available to link visually impaired stokers with sighted tandem pilots, spotted on the Hobbes Tandem mailing list. The Blind Tandem Cycling Connection aims to link stokers and pilots and provide information about tandem cycling, clubs and events across the US. Their website also has some useful tips on good ettiquette for both the pilot and stoker and tips on tandem riding that could apply to any team.

Folding forum unfolds again
Velo Vision reader Steve Sparrow got in touch to tell us that he's relaunched his Folding Bike Forum, after a period off his bikes, so if you've an interest in folders, pop along and join in.

Beijing's Bicycle Boost
Increasing affluence in China has inevitably led to increasing car ownership, with the nation displacing the US as the world's largest car market. The result, of course, is congestion and pollution, and according to this Guardian article, the authorities in the capital want to tackle the problem by increasing bicycle use, which has declined with the rise of the car. Measures planned include an improvement in cycling infrastructure and new rental schemes.

Bicycles were, of course, once ubiquitous in the city, with 80% of residents pedalling to work, a fact that led singer Katie Melua to sing that there were Nine Million Bicycles in Beijing:

Fancy fixie footwear
These days riding a fixed-gear bike is as much about style as function, and if style matters to you, you need the right shoes. A press release informs us that shoemakers Veja have teamed up with Parisian fixed-gear specialist shop Cyclope to produce an "exclusive fixed-gear suitable sneaker". Available in red or turquoise, a limited edition of 384 pairs are available from Paper-Scissor-Stone, in London or Leeds, from the beginning of February. Available in sizes 6-11 only...

If the shoes aren't your style, there is a rather nice wheel motif teeshirt or if you want something noticable for visibility, how about this eye catching knitwear.

Stylish cover art
This Ecovelo blog entry shows a recent cyclist-themed cover from The New Yorker magazine.

The illustration by Frank Viva is entitled 'Great Expectations' and posters, notecards or teeshirts with the image on can be ordered from The New Yorker Store. Guesses as to the make of bicycle, or breed of dog, are welcome.

  • Ecovelo were very enthusiastic about the New Yorker cover, but I'm afraid I'm not. I think it simply portrays cyclists as rather odd, sad, eccentric types who the sophisticated would look down on. Look at the hunched back, the servile, bowed posture, and the rather vacant expression, dressed in dull greys and browns, riding a machine (even given artistic licence) is too small for him. The dog in the front basket is the only redeeming factor - he (or she) at least looks happy!

  • I love the look of that Velokit - reminiscent of the 2CV!
