Campaigning and green news

Promoting cycling Europe-wide, the London Cyclist archive online, Green Oil gets greener, bike trailer tales wanted and belles ride bikes.

Sue Archer writes

Hey PRESTO!
PRESTO is a new EU project to promote cycling as daily transport in European cities, through friendly and useful infrastucture and good planning. Part of the scheme will include the promotion of electric bikes, as an attractive option for the less fit, or those in hilly areas. To help with this, the European Twowheel Retailers Association has published a policy guide aimed at planners and policy makers. Five cities will act as demonstration areas, and the first international workshop will take place in Tczew, Poland, at the end of February.

London Cyclist archived online
Jason Patient wrote to let us know that the London Cycling Campaign are now archiving back issues of London Cyclist magazine online for non-members to read. There are currently 14 issues uploaded, with the three most recent issues exclusive to members.

Extra Green Oil
We reviewed Green Oil back in Issue 30, and now the manufacturers are pleased to announce that it comes in a 100% recycled plastic bottle. Even better, if you return your bottle to a stockist, or direct to Green Oil, they'll refill it under their bottle deposit scheme, making the bottle even more eco-friendly, and the contents 20p cheaper.

The Bike Trailer blog needs you!
The Bike Trailer Shop is dedicated to pedal powered haulage and they are looking for stories from trailer users for the Bike Trailer Blog. So whether you have feedback on a production model, or pictures of a DIY project, send them via the submission page. Or if you haven't got your own trailer yet, why not take inspiration from some of the current submissions, including this recycled school desk idea.

Bicycle Belles
Our friends at Cyclemagic have just launched a new project, aimed at getting women interested in cycling. The Velo Belle blog will cover all aspects of cycling from a feminine viewpoint, to show that cycling is not only fun and good for you, it can be stylish and convenient as well. There will also be a Velo Belle event, on the 16th March at Queens Hall, University of Leicester. Activities will include bike try-out, maintenance sessions, a fashion show and creative recycling with Creative Problem Solvers. Cyclemagic's resident historian will be on hand to explain how the bicycle helped female emancipation, hopefully accompanied by Daisy Belle - 90 years old and recently rescued from a dark garage...

Although cycling is growing in popularity generally, there is a disparity between the numbers of men and women taking it up. British Cycling are keen to address this, and are asking women to complete their Why are fewer women cycling? survey. If you know any women who are hesitant about cycling, why not get them to complete the survey to provide a true beginner's picture.
