Small wheels, coins and cablesBike Friday takes to the desert, Brompton takes racing to the USA, Alex Moulton looks back on his life, commemorative cycling coinage and the latest cycle highway idea... Bike Friday of Arabia For keen cyclists having a bike to hand to ride whenever they want is pretty important, but if your job involves postings overseas it's often hard to take you bike with you. Bike Friday have a growing number of service personnel among their customers, taking advantage of the ability to box the bike up in a suitcase. This report from the Bike Friday Community describes how a Pocket Rocket coped on a tour of duty in Qatar - with high humidity, blowing sand and daily temperatures around 48 degrees Celsius (120 Fahrenheit). Despite this, owner Mike Anderson managed over 500 miles in three weeks, riding 4 mile loops of his base. Brompton Championships go Stateside The annual Brompton World Championship race, with its dress code and prizes for best dressed competitors, seems like a uniquely British event, but this year sees the first US championship on the 20th March in Philadephia. Places are limited to 100, and the first placed male and female riders will receive air tickets and free entry to the 2010 World Championships at Blenheim Palace in October. Alex Moulton looks back News from Moulton Buzz of Alex Moulton's autobiography, recounting a career in engineering that includes aeronautics, cars and of course, the Moulton bicycle. We've got a copy to review for the next issue, and at first glance it's full of photos and facsimilies of interesting documents and handsketched designs... Commemorative coin captures cycling Cycling has made it onto the reverse of a 50p coin commemorating the 2012 Olympics, and as this BBC story reports, the designer is a 16 year old keen cyclist. Theo Crutchley-Mack's off-centre design captures the speed of velodrome cycling, and will be part of a series of 50p pieces celebrating the Olympics and Paralympics. 3 million of the coins wil be released, although we suspect keen cyclists might take a few out of circulation as souvenirs. Cycling high? You've heard of cable cars, but cable cycles? Spotted on Cyclechat, Kolelinia (from the Bulgarian for Bike and Line) is a concept for bike lanes in the sky, with bikes ridden along narrow tracks and held in place by guylines and handlebar mounted safety brackets. Despite scepticism on Cyclechat, it does seem to be a serious idea, although the fact that the 'additional safety devices' are a climbing harness and rope is a little off-putting to anyone not keen on heights. And how do you overtake? You don't apparently, but in this solution, a roller fitted to the rear wheel, allows a faster rider to push a slower one along - perhaps a little alarming for the hapless pootler in front! Cable mounted pedal power isn't completely unheard of - in Issue 30 we showed the pedal power cradles used by engineers working on French power cables. Posted on 25 February 2010 Your comments ...
