Bike Week joins the Green Team, ICE blog and ice cream, more Metabikes models, inside the mind of Quest's creator, and the unspoken innovation...

Sue Archer writes:

Bike Week goes green
This year, Bike Week will be backed by Team Green Britain, a movement founded by EDF Energy to promote more sustainable living. Bike Week will run from 19-27 June, and events normally include things like family bike rides, cyclists' breakfasts and Dr Bike sessions.

The Bike Week Cycling Calculator could tell you how much you save by cycling - assuming you don't spend it all on new bikes and extra cake!

ICE blog and Ice cream
Inspired Cycle Engineering have launched their own ICE Blog. In the first entry you can watch a trike being assembled in super quick time.

Meanwhile, if you're looking for ICE and you mix up your .co.uk and your .com, you get something a bit different. Icicle Tricycles of Portland, Oregan, are reviving an old tradition of pedal powered ice cream salesmen. Pedalling an ice cream trike sounds sedate, unless you were taking part in the Parisian Course de Triporteurs.

Metabikes for all ages and terrains
News of some innovations from MetaBikes. The Metabikes BS launches a range of lower priced recumbent bikes, using cheaper components on the same quality frame. The BS comes in 4 sizes, including an extra small for the teenager or shorter rider. With basic prices of 968 Euros for the adult sizes and 886 Euros for the XS, it's certainly a more affordable option.

And if you fancy a bit of off-roading, Metabike have that covered too, with the Metamorph, which can be seen in action on the MetaBikes welcome page. The MetaMorph models will have large diameter wheels, mountain bike tyres, and front suspension, and will be available in the spring.

Inside the mind behind the Quest
Velomobile fans will be interested in this Bent Blog interview with Ymte Sijbrandij, of Velomobiel.nl, in which he muses on disc brakes, racing and the increasing market for velomobiles.

On the subject of velomobiles, David Hembrow sent us a link to this video of a Sinner Mango owner enjoying a night ride in the snow:

Spokes? Who needs them?
Rik Beeson sent us a link to this Gizmag article, on a spokeless bicycle developed by a class of Yale students. The students apparently chose the product because it 'looked cool' and didn't seem to have been built before. One student suggested that the space freed up by the lack of spokes could be used to house a gyro balanced basket, or an electric motor. Though how would you attach the motor to the wheel? Some sort of 'spokes', perhaps?

  • I did a brief article on three Penn State students who did a spokeless tadpole trike. They actually did all three wheels but needed a lot of work on the gearing.
