Hubs, bags and more

Sturmey-Archer updates, all you ever wanted to know about SRAM hub gears, M5pro shop open for business, round the world in 99 days, Dahon bag it up, and a glimpse of the Glyde.

Sue Archer writes

Sturmey Archer news
Pictures from the Taipei International Bike show in this Sunrace Sturmey Archer news article show the company's newest hub gears. The S2C and S2 2 are dual speed hubs with back-pedal, or 'kick back' changing. With no need for a shifter cable, these should be popular with fans of the clean 'fixie' look, and will be available this summer. Also new this year, for those wanting more than two speeds, are the CS-RF3 and CS-RK3 systems combining derailleur sprockets with a 3 speed hub gear, removing the need for a multiple chainring system. This market is currently covered by the Sram Dual Drive and Shimano Nexave Intego units, and it'll be interesting to see how Sturmey's system compares.

Also from the Sturmey Archer blog is news that the Sturmey Archer Heritage Archive has been redesigned and updated for easier navigation, with images split into categories, and sorted by date, to make it easier to find the picture you're interested in.

All you ever wanted to know about SRAM hubgears...
...but were afraid to ask. You can now download a pdf of technical specifications for SRAM's nine hub gear systems and other components. For each gear model there are technical data and assembly requirements, as well as instructions on installation, adjustment and use and a troubleshooting guide. At 62 pages, and 10Mb, it's certainly comprehensive!

M5 pros shop opens
Spotted on Ligfiets, news that Dutch recumbent makers M5, who specialise in lightweight bikes and components, have opened an online shop dedicated to the sale of components. With not a recumbent in site, they are perhaps hoping to attract the discerning 'upright' lightweight bike enthusiast.

Round the world in 99 days
Round the world cycling records have been tumbling recently, and now British cyclist Alan Bate is going to have a go. You can read about the attempt on World Cycling Record.com. Alan isn't just hoping to beat the current record of 165 days, but to smash it, completing his trip in a mere 99 days. As the record criteria stipulate that the rider must cover just over 18,000 miles on the bike, some basic maths suggests a target of 182 miles a day. Now based in Thailand, Alan will leave Bangkok on the 31st March, to follow a route that takes him through Australia and New Zealand, North and South America, the UK, Europe and India. He will have a support team, so will presumably not be carrying too much weight, but it's still quite a target!

Dahon have it in the bag
Folding bike specialists Dahon have launched a range of bags to provide bike carrying and storage solutions. The Stow Bag and Body Bag, seen below demonstrated on Youtube, are relatively normal stowage bags, with padding and tough fabric to protect against bumps and scrapes. The perhaps oddly named Body Bag allows the bike to be stored part-folded in a long flat area like under a bed or hanging from a door or wall, making good use of space in a small office or appartment.

The CarryOn Cover is a convenient lightweight cover to make a bike acceptable on most public transport. As integral straps take the weight of the bike, rather than the cover itself, the fabric can be light enough for the whole bag to fold away into a saddlepack. The cover is quickly and easily placed over the folded bike, and a drawstring tighens it underneath - and there's even a pocket to tuck the excess drawstring away into, which is a nice touch.

Prices are $45 for the CarryOn bag, $80 for the Stow Bag, and $125 for the Body Bag, and they will be available from Dahon dealers worldwide.

Glimpsing the Glyde
We've been following the development of Greenspeed's Glyde velomobile, and now you can see one in action in this video from the US:

The Glyde seems to have some neat features, like a confidently latching 'lid', tight turning circle and plenty of cockpit adjustability. We'll be getting one for review soon!
