Plug and play, four wheeled fun, BMX anti-bandits, Skeppshult comes to Cardiff, in business in the saddle, Ralf Bohle passes away and Norman Fay ride details.

Sue Archer writes:

Plug and play
German bike makers Tout Terrain have announced the launch of their new Plug device, which converts the output from a dynamo hub to charge electronic devices such as phones or GPS units via a USB connection. The Plug can be installed in any bike with a suitable fork, and is integrated into the steerer tube for security. See the FAQs for details.

Four wheeled fun
From one kind of tout terrain to another: Velo Tout Terrain (VTT) is the French term for mountain biking, and now there's a new form of the sport - Quad-VTT. French manufacturers QBX make an all terrain quadricycle, which can be hired at a couple of locations, or bought. The first World QBX Championship will be taking place on the 29-30 May at the Velo Vert festival, dubbed the 'Woodstock of Mountain Biking' taking place at Montgenevre in the Alps. If you can't be there to see the action, you can get a feel for the QBX in this video:

BMX Anti-bandits
Meanwhile, back in Britain, the BMX bike has become part of the police's toolkit in Leicestershire, according to this Leicestershire Constabulary news report. The Police liveried Haro F3 bike will be used for school cycling safety sessions, and as a conversation starter with young people. The article doesn't mention whether PCSO Vince Preston can do any tricks on it...

Skeppshult comes to Cardiff
News from Skeppshult Bicycles that they have just supplied their first tricycles in the UK, to Pedal Power, a Cardiff based charity that hires bikes and trikes to make cycling accessible to all. With the help of funding from Comic Relief and Environment Wales the tricycles will join the current fleet of bikes, trikes, tandems and more. Pedal Power have two locations, in Cardiff city centre, and at Cardiff Bay.

In Business, in the saddle
Bjørn Gabrielsen wrote to let us know that the BBC World Service programme Global Business recently featured cycling, a subject close to the heart of presenter Peter Day. Life Cycle featured two companies with a Velo Vision ethos: Worksman Cycles, who make work trikes, and Bamboo Bike Studio, who produce bamboo bikes, and help clients to build their own from a kit of parts. The programme is currently available to Listen Again, in some countries, but if you can't access it you can read Peter Day's web comment on the Programme.

Global Business is a sister programme to BBC Radio Four's In Business which also recently covered the resurgence of cycling from a business point of view. Again, if you can't Listen Again, you can read the web comment.

Ralf Bohle passes away
Sad news from Schwalbe, that founder Ralf Bohle has died at the age of 75, after a long illness. Ralf continued the Bohle family business of bicycles and bicycle parts when his own father died prematurely, and had the foresight to forge links with Asia in the 1970's, founding the Schwalbe tyre brand, with development and marketing in Germany, and production in South Korea. The family connection lives on, with Ralf's son Frank and son-in-law Holger Jahn on the board of directors.

Norman Fay Ride details
News from Harry Lavery that following the success of last year's Norman Fay ride it will be run again as part of a Cycle Festival at Bents Park, South Shields, on the 13th June. It will be a leisurely 5 mile mass ride, passing the sites of Norman's shops. The festival will also include displays of antique bikes, local cycle organisations, trade stalls and displays.
