Bananas, bikecasts and more...

Going bananas on a loadbike, building your own generators, touring Yucatan, pedalling podcasts, Brooklyn Bike Fetish day images, Size My Bike and Cyclemagic's tenth anniversary...

Sue Archer writes:

Going bananas on a loadbike
Bananas are excellent cycling food - good for energy, naturally conveniently packaged, and the right shape to fit in a jersey pocket. But Jason Patient sent us a link to this YouTube video, showing just how many of them can be carried on a Yuba Mundo loadbike, albeit with a little bit of a wobble:

Of course for many, carrying such loads are a daily part of making a living. These pictures from Will Graham Photography show the race to get produce to market first.

The Generation Game
Jason also sent us a couple of links do Do-It-Yourself power generation projects from Instructables.com. The first is for a Pedal Powered Generator to power an Ipod, portable TV or DVD player. The second is a homebuilt lighting dynamo running off the rear tyre - building your own as opposed to buying one is perhaps a step too far for most of us, but it might make a nice project for someone getting into electronics...

Fiesta Mexicana
Folding bike makers Bike Friday have a community of satisfied owners reporting back on their trips, and Brenda Carlton recently discovered the joys of the Yucatan peninsula on her Friday. There she discovered Mayan ruins, Yucatan cuisine, and bicycle taxis, among other things.

Pedalling Podcasts
Resonance FM, is a London based arts radio channel, which also happens to have a regular Bike Show, which you can access as a podcast. A couple of recent editions have looked at what it might take to turn London into a cycling city on the scale of Copenhagen or Berlin, and whether strips of paint on the road are the answer - although the show is London-centric, there's interest for anyone keen to see more cycling in the UK.

Brooklyn's Bicycle Fetish
New York's City Reliquary recently hosted the 6th Annual Bicycle Fetish Day. You can see pictures of the some of the bikes taking part in this Gothamist.com report. Cool urban fixies were much in evidence, alongside some very tall, and very short bikes. Thanks to Jason Patient for the link.

Measure up for your perfect fit
If you have an iPhone, you'll always be on the look out for useful apps. Size My Bike asks for six specific body measurements, and calculates your ideal frame size and geometry for you.

If you don't have an iPhone, and have no idea what an app is, there are numerous online resources with similar purposes, some of which are listed on Cyclemetrics.com.

Cyclemagic celebrate

Leicester's community cycling project Cyclemagic will be celebrating 10 years of Spokesfest and Cyclemagic this year, and are holding a Birthday Bash over the weekend of 2 - 3 October. On the Sunday they are hoping to organise a ride out to the location of this photo of the Leicester Cycling Club taken in 1886, and recreate it in 2010 style.

They are also planning a display of pictures from events over the last ten years, so if you have any to share, do contact them.
