Buggies to Bromptons

Rohloff on moonbuggies and a Rohloff race, Brompton Champs registrations, cycle history in Prague and AZUB's tenth anniversary...

Sue Archer writes:

Ride me to the moon
Fitted to touring bikes, the Rohloff hub gear has been all around the world. Now it seems, the moon in the limit, as a Rohloff equipped machine has won the NASA Great Moonbuggy Race. As you can read in this Rohloff report a German team, from the International Space Education Institute, Leipzig, are the first non-US team to win the event, a race round a 0.7 mile course including suitably lunar bumps and craters. Apart from being purely human powered, collapsible and fulfilling size and weight criteria, each moonbuggy must be fitted with various simulated antennae and controls and "moon dust abatement devices", or mudguards. You can see the buggy and its crew in action here:

Rohloff racing, down to Earth...
For those Rolhoff owners who prefer their racing to be more Earthbound, there is the Rolhoff Speedhub Challenge, taking place on the 6th June, as part of Rohloff Mad East event in Altenburg, Germany. Professional or amateur riders with Rolhoff equipped bikes or tandems can take part in the 50 mile race over hilly forest terrain on the German/Czech border, with prize money totalling 2000 Euros. In addition, any rider placed in a position divisible by 11 (11th, 22nd, 33rd etc) will win a Rohloff t-shirt, providing the entertaining prospect of a fierce battle for 44th place...

Get your racing suits out...
Registration is now open for the 2010 Brompton World Championships. The event will once again be held at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, on Sunday 3rd October. This year the field has been increased to 750 riders, including the winners of a few National Championships around the world. Starting positions are issued on a first come first served basis, so register early to make a quick start! As ever, helmets and smart business attire are compulsory.

The deadline for registration is 19th September, or whenever the event is full, whichever comes first.

History conference comes to Prague
This year's International Cycle History Conference will be held in Prague, Czech Republic, from 5 - 7 August. The conference will include presentations, an evening visit to an exhibition of over 300 vintage bicycles, and a Gala Dinner. The cost for a non-presenting delegate is 5500 Czech crowns (around £190), which includes events and dinner, but not accommodation - special prices for delegates can be obtained at the Hotel Belvedere, near the conference venue. Czech out recumbents with Azub
Czech recumbent builders Azub are 10 years old this year and to celebrate they are organising the 2010 annual Czech recumbent meeting, in their home town of Uherský Brod. Running from the 9th to the 12th September, the meeting will include rides and visits to local places of interest, with folk music, slides and movies in the evenings. Owners of all makes of recumbents are welcome, as are any non-recumbent family and friends. You can see a few pictures from last year's meeting, when 119 reccumbents attended, on the Azub blog.

Judging by this film from 1943, it seems that recumbents, and various other unusual cycles, have been meeting in the Czech Republic for some time:
