York Cycle Show 2010 - report in photosA brief illustrated write-up from the CTC Cycle Show at York last weekend... Sue Archer writes: Last weekend saw the annual descent of cyclists onto the Knavesmire at York for the CTC York Cycle Show. Although the weather was not ideal, especially on Saturday with a cold wind blowing, there was still plenty to see and do. Velo Vision was there of course, although this year we'd left the 'Punch and Judy' stand at home in favour of our new Electric Bike Magazine backdrop. As ever we had a selection of back issue bargains and special show rate subscriptions. Plenty of readers dropped by to say hello, and check the timing of the traditional Saturday night Velovisionaries pub ride. There were various entertainments on offer, including for the youngsters, Bo the Clown, seen here pedalling his trailer bike train - that must have been interesting in the high winds! One of the joys of York Rally is the variety of well kept classic bikes on show. Here's some very pretty lugwork on a rare electrically assisted Flying Gate at the TJ Cycles stand. We'll report on the electric-assist aspects of the show on the Electric Bike Magazine website shortly. OK, just one more electrical item! Velo Vision reader Stephen Britt is into the final three for his region in an innovation contest to win £50,000 for his pedal invention. He showed us the prototype and it really did seem to provide a useful push! Please do head along to the competition page and vote for him. It's down to public votes and every one counts - get yours in by 5th July and tell your friends! By the end of Saturday the wind was still cold but at least the sun had come out for the Velovisionaries pub ride. As ever there was an eclectic range of machines and riders on the ride - as well as this group who went via the cyclepath, there was a 'road' group of trikes, including a tandem, which took a more direct route avoiding tight turns and narrow gates. Sunday brought better weather, and bigger crowds in the trade marquees. Here, local bike shop Cycle Heaven show off their range, including the Dutch Gazelle brand popular in flat York. The National Association of Veteran Cycle Clubs had a large display of venerable bicycles and tricycles, with some of the riders adopting period costume too. For those in need of some healthy refreshment, Smoothie Bikes were on hand with this blender unit, and plenty of fruit. I had a go (it's not me pictured), and a minute or so at a gentle pace was all it took to liquidise the fruit, although I was encouraged to a short 'sprint' finish to ensure a smooth blend. The smoothie blender unit simply fits to a standard rack, and would normally be over the rear wheel, but this bike is set up with the unit over the front wheel so that pedallers can see the unit in action. Also outside was a large display or recumbents, racing and otherwise, from the BHPC. Some people might be aware that there is some sort of football tournament on at the moment, and this rider obviously wanted to leave people in no doubt as to their allegiance - the red and white panniers and striped bar tape are nice touches. Finally, there was a chance for our Editor to say hello to an old friend. PELT, or Pete's Extremely Long Tandem, has been owned by a number of people since he built it in the late '90s, and now it's back in York again with a new owner. It was good to see it still going strong! Posted on 24 June 2010
