Dates, bamboo, plumbing and more!Dates for the diary, a laidback photo competition, recognition for an iconic tricycle, Philippine bambooseros and a pedalling plumber! Sue Archer writes: Dates down under Annemarie Driver got in touch to let us know about a couple of events of interest to cycle historians down under. On February 19th, 2011, the village of Evandale, Tasmania will host their annual village fair and the National Penny Farthing Championships. This event has gained a reputation for highly competitive racing over nearly 30 years and 2011 looks to be no exception. Events will include a mile race, sprints, slaloms, relays and more, with associated 100 mile and 30 km events in the week leading up to the fair. You can read all about the event at the Evendale Village Fair website, and if you happen to be in the area in February why not go along for what promises to be quite a spectacle! Later in the year, Christchurch in New Zealand will host the 2011 Australasian Cycling History Conference, from 15-17 April. The conference is expected to include guest speakers, workshop and collection visits, and a range of papers and presentations. If you're interested in attending, or giving a paper, contact: info(AT)cyclinghistory.net.au (replace (AT) with @) For historians and vintage cycle fans who can't make it to the Southern Hemisphere, Annemarie also mentions two events in France this summer: The 22nd International Cycling History Conference will take place in Paris from the 25-28 May, and the International Veteran Cycle Rally will run from 1-5 June at La Ferte Imbault in the French region of Sologne. The Rally will include races, museum visits and a parade in the regional capital of Romorantin. Berlin plans new expo News in from Germany of a major new bicycle and urban mobility exhibition in Berlin next March. VELOBerlin will be a collaboration between Berlin's cycling centre of excellence Velo:Konzept and the organisers of Eurobike, the massive annual Autumn trade show we reported from in Issue 39 and in many previous years. VELOBerlin is set to become the leading public bike show, by presenting all that's new in the cycling world to the public at the beginning of the outdoor season. The exhibition is on the 26th and 27th March, 2011, at the Messe Berlin exhibition centre. Snap up a prize with your snaps If you've got a great photo of your trike, why not enter it in the ICE trike photo competition? Any photo featuring a trike is eligible, so it doesn't even have to be an ICE model. Top prize is $300 worth of recumbent accessories, with 2 runner-up prizes of sets of Radical Side Pods. To enter, visit the ICE website, and click on the competition banner at the bottom of the screen. Entries must be uploaded by the end of November, after which an online vote will select a shortlist of photos to be judged the ICE judging panel, with the results announced on the 16th December. So dig out your holiday photos, or get snapping! Christiania claims 'classic' title Spotted on Velorution, news that the Christiania load carrying trike has been awarded the Danish Design Center's Classics Prize. The trike, which has been a feature of the Copenhagen streets for 25 years, was developed to provide transport around the car-free area of the same name in the Danish capital, and is equally at home carrying cargo or a family of children. Velorution is the London dealer for Christianias, with prices starting from £1150. The shop also recently featured in the Taiwanese edition of GQ magazine, in a feature on stylish urban cycling and bike shops. The piece was illustrated with a few pictures taken for Velo Vision's own dealer visit in Issue 35. Bamboo goes from strength to strength Bamboo is quietly catching on as an alternative frame building material for bicycles, and now the Philippines is getting in on the act, as this Sunday Enquirer article explains. Local social entrepreneur Ronald Villanueva has set up a business building bamboo bikes, working with local Gawad Kalinga villagers, in a similar model to that of Craig Calfee and the original Bamboosero bikes from Ghana. Philippine bikes are now also being sold under the Bamboosero brand, providing much needed work and foreign income for poorer communities. Pedalling plumber on tap... While Velo Vision readers will be familiar with the concept of load carrying by bike, the Metro newspaper was clearly impressed with the efforts of Chris Jones, the Weymouth plumber who featured in this Metro story. Chris has taken to his bike to beat the traffic jams caused by the building work preparing the town as the sailing venue for the 2012 Olympics. His 'purpose built bike' appears to be a regular frame fitted with an Xtracycle rear end, allowing him to carry equipment including ladders and lengths of copper piping. He says the ability to beat traffic jams and confidently predict journey times is already paying off. Posted on 12 November 2010
