SPEZI 2007 report!

A brief photo report with headline news from the German show while I work on a fuller report for Issue 26...

As with my BikeRight report some of the images are
multi-exposure panoramas - scroll to the right if you can't see it all on your
screen. I'm over-using the technique I know - I promise not to do so too
much in the mag... and I've not spent much time cleaning them up either, so most
things that move are blurry... and it'll break the site layout somewhat, too,
I'm afraid. Anyway, here goes!

General

A baking hot weekend, and all around the Germersheim Town Hall were bikes:

As usual there was a busy test track:

And fast-paced trike racing on the Saturday, covered by several regional TV channels:

Bike Friday Tikit

Perhaps the most significant new appearance at the show was the much
anticipated Bike Friday Tikit folder:

It's got an incredibly fast fold: knocking the seatpost forwards releases the
rear end, which when swung under releases the stem lock via a cunning cable system.
So essentially just one action releases the whole bike. Very clever - and when
folded it can be easily trollied along on the front wheel. There's space for luggage
too - that front rack and also a basket or saddlebag behind the seatpost. I rode it
too - it felt fine; perhaps not the stiffest folder I've ridden but really rather
good. I'm promised a test bike ASAP but as Bike Friday report massive demand
already they say it might be a while.

Schwalbe Winter 406

Schwalbe seem to be really stepping up as the
niche quality tyre supplier. New to the range is this 20" (406) studded tyre for
ice. It'll be available from Septemberish this year, and is also available in
various larger sizes.

Challenge trike and Mistral Travel

I wasn't really convinced by the direct steering on the Challenge
trike we tested in VV25: at the SPEZI I rode it with conventional indirect steering,
and it was a FAR more stable and relaxing ride. They also had a prototype of the
(rear) suspended version, with a 20" wheel:

They were also showing the Travel Mistral, which all (inc trailer) packs into the
big suitcase. All together the weight was 23.9kg (inc bike, trailer and case)
although they hope to edge that down soon with some new wheels and axles for the
trailer:

Bike Revolution/Steintrikes MadMaxEvo

This new full-suspension trike was competing in the races...

Fleiner

This new leaning trike weighs just 20 kg or so, much
lighter than the Tripendo which works on the same general
principle. Only the seat looked a bit less than elegant to some onlookers, but I
heard from a couple of visitors to the show who were very tempted to buy one -
prices are around the 5000-Euro mark apparently.

ICE bikes

Trice makers ICE had two versions of their new
two-wheeler prototypes, a more conventional fast touring version with hard-shell
seat and this one, shod with Big Apple tyres, a mesh seat and with full suspension.
Chris from ICE didn't seem much flustered as he took it down some steps:

All for now - as usual MUCH more will appear in the magazine!

  • Doc´Reynolds had some fun at the Spezi 2007.
One stand was promoteing a new type of saddle made of plastic.
Promotional tool was a cast of a human hipbone.
My question was,, is this saddle comfortable after you have peeled off the skin and flesh and fat of your own rear end?
For more information read Jerom K. Jeroms book "Three Men on The Bummel"!

  • I like the photos, and I think the blurred motion adds to the effect.
BTW did you get a chance to try my VeloKit?
