New load bike in prototype stage
Posted by: Borntoolate (IP Logged)
Date: January 29, 2008 12:53PM The frames of Longbike are to be built entirely from recycled frames and parts. Production will be on a very small scale. A hub geared and braked model will be available.
BikeRescue is York's bike recycling scheme, and is a non-profit org. The first prototype is currently having extensive road testing and 'daily use' trials. I quite like the unpainted aesthetic, but once we are happy with the frame's geometry, braze-ons etc, it will be cleaned up, and powder-coated. By the time of the york Cycle Rally, there should be a few to ride on the VeloVision pub ride. Date: January 30, 2008 08:45AM Nice. When you're past the prototype stage, I'll knit you some dress guard panels...
Good flood pics as well. I have visions of you all standing on your loading bay platform, huddled together like passengers on the Titanic, as the waters rose... If I had a baby elephant, it could help me wash the car. If I had a car. Also often found on www.cyclechat.co.uk Re: New load bike in prototype stage

Date: January 30, 2008 10:06AM Excellent - no doubt inspired by the Yuba Mundo? I suppose that every bike will be unique too. I like it. Re: New load bike in prototype stage

Date: January 30, 2008 05:12PM No, not inspired by the Mundo, but by a bike seen at last years North American Handbuilt Bicycle Show (www.NAHBS.com), pictured in Vintage Bicycle Quarterly (www.vintagebicyclepress.com). De Fietsfabriek in Holland do similar sorts of things as well.
The Mundo interface comes from the fact that we decided to buy a Mundo for home use, then the delays in getting them into the UK resulted in me saying "b*****ks to it - lets develop our own". Our bike is unique in being built from dead bikes. Every one will be unique, and thats part of the ethos. Re: New load bike in prototype stage

Date: January 30, 2008 06:17PM It looks a very nice bike. If anyone's doubting the practicality of extended "normal" bikes like this for carrying luggage then perhaps a look at my review of the similar Xtracycle might be of some interest:
[hembrow.eu] I've been riding my Xtracycle equipped bike for 5 years, mostly to take my baskets to the post office, but I've also moved all sorts of other things with it. This new design looks to be just as practical, and I really like the "dead bikes" angle. I think it's reasonable to say that what I've found positive about my bike will equally apply to this new load bike. David. Re: New load bike in prototype stage

Date: February 01, 2008 08:29AM I'll have to drop by and take a few measurements. When I've finished the scarf I'm in the middle of, and the tank top for my nephew... If I had a baby elephant, it could help me wash the car. If I had a car. Also often found on www.cyclechat.co.uk Re: New load bike in prototype stage

Date: February 02, 2008 12:10PM re the Xtracycle, we also have one of those, and we love it. It's also very useful for ferrying bikes around. Obviously thats something we do a lot of, but in domestic use its handy for picking up bikes left at the station, or school. Bernie's son Rab loves to 'surf' on the deck (which I have replaced with a lengthened and stronger one).
See these pics; [farm3.static.flickr.com] [farm3.static.flickr.com] Ours is built into a 2005 Marin Point Reyes which was a donation with a dodgy rear-end. The longbike is less cumbersome that the Xtra, and a neater solution, though of course you can't revert back to a normal bike like with the Xtracycle. Re: New load bike in prototype stage

It involves a lot of mucking about with changing the chain length, removing the extension, moving the derailleur back to where it used to be, sorting out break and gear cables etc. I've never been tempted to take mine off since fitting it. Date: February 04, 2008 09:38AM Calling Bikerescue... Calling Bikerescue.
I had a brainwave over the weekend, re knitted dress guards, which gets around the problem of them getting wet when it rains, and also extends the recycled goods ethos. I'll drop by soon and tell you about it, in the meantime if you get given anything in decent strength plastic bags (think Lakeland, or posh clothes shops, rather than tescos carriers), hang onto the bags... When's a good time to find most of you in? If I had a baby elephant, it could help me wash the car. If I had a car. Also often found on www.cyclechat.co.uk Re: New load bike in prototype stage

Date: February 04, 2008 05:43PM Good thinking Arch. An alternative (though not so ecofriendly), waxed table cloth material. Very smart, stronger and available in many colourful designs. Re: New load bike in prototype stage

And where's the fun in anything that isn't knitted? ;-) If I had a baby elephant, it could help me wash the car. If I had a car. Also often found on www.cyclechat.co.uk Re: New load bike in prototype stage

Date: February 05, 2008 11:42AM We are open Tues Weds & Sats 10-6, and Thurs 10-8. Tel; 01904 733789. Thanks for the opportunity to advertise blatantly and with impunity!
What about using this method for; Panniers, Basket liners and covers, BoB-Yak side covers (to stop everything falling out)? Re: New load bike in prototype stage

Date: February 05, 2008 12:13PM The possibilities are endless! Obviously, being knitted, it's not waterproof in the sense of keeping water out, but it is more able to get damp without mould than yarn would be. Of course, it could also be lined with plastic, for better waterproofing. <wonders about heat bonding edges in some way>
I'll drop by soon... If I had a baby elephant, it could help me wash the car. If I had a car. Also often found on www.cyclechat.co.uk Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
