Date: June 05, 2009 03:42PM Hmmm, I reckon, from my memory of the Conference bike, and the York Selby path, you might just get it along some parts - although you might sweep all other users off! Unfortunately, I can think of at least one place where I'm sure you wouldn't get through, due to a telegraph pole in the way... Pity, it's the shortest, most direct route into York... If I had a baby elephant, it could help me wash the car. If I had a car. Also often found on www.cyclechat.co.uk Re: The York Cycle Show 2009.

Date: June 10, 2009 07:38PM No, the YSCT will not accommodate the conference bike in several places. These are mostly the access points, but not all. I wont go into the boring details on this forum, but my recommendation from Selby would be Cawood, Stillingfleet, Naburn, up my drive and onto the cycle track (YO19 4RW, the old station), to Appleton Close, Bishopthorpe, then through the village and along Bishopthorpe road to the Rally. We will be busy 'doing' the rally, or i'd come out and guide you. Re: The York Cycle Show 2009.

Date: June 10, 2009 07:43PM Ive just been informed by my darling daughter, that the VV ride are all invited to a Barbie/party etc on our lawn on our way back from the pub. We are just over the swingbridge, on the cycle track, in the old station building (yes, it has been converted into a house, sort-of!). Re: The York Cycle Show 2009.

Date: June 11, 2009 12:52PM Thanks for the suggestions. We're having a planning meeting tonight so the information's quite timely.
Just need to sort out Nottingham to Selby now... Re: The York Cycle Show 2009.

Date: June 11, 2009 03:25PM I look forward to seeing the Conference Bike negotiate the BMX burms (berms? - concrete humps, anyway) under the A64 bridge.... ;-)
Woo hoo! Apres pub barbie ahoy! :-) If I had a baby elephant, it could help me wash the car. If I had a car. Also often found on www.cyclechat.co.uk Re: The York Cycle Show 2009.

Date: June 15, 2009 10:33PM ...the section after that was one reason foe avoiding route 65 after Bishopthorpe. Narrow stretch of path with the narrower fenced-in bit by the A64. Really, dont try it guys! Re: The York Cycle Show 2009.

Got to go to the party just to get my pic in Hello mag, who will undoubtedly be there. Musn't forget mi pink hand bag! Re: The York Cycle Show 2009.

Date: June 17, 2009 10:52AM Hi All
I would like to join the VV ride this year , if its not a closed shop? As VV reader , a local and a recumbent rider I thought it was time I came out ,so to speak , and became more social. So at the risk of causing you to repeat yourselves, where do we meet and what’s the route? As I will be bringing the Slyway Explorer out for it first public outing , if you exclude the quite roads of the wolds, I am hoping the route is not on busy roads as I haven’t yet mastered the junction stop start with out the wobbles. Date: June 17, 2009 11:32AM Hi Pete, all are very welcome, it'll be good to see you there!
Just sending VV34 off today so apologies for late 'organisation' of the ride :-) Meet 1930 under the covered walkway just past the toilets near the rally entrance, and the route is as follows:
Only a very short stretch of road down to the pub, the rest is all completely off-road on the Selby path :-). And I'm sure you wont' be the only wobby one! Re: The York Cycle Show 2009.

Date: June 17, 2009 12:55PM Sorry to keep hijacking this thread, but here's another plug for the conference bike ride. Cosybike (www.cosybike.co.uk) are supporting us and have now added a blog to their website. The route that's been posted up is quite approximate - we'll be avoiding major A roads where possible.
The send-off is from Derby Market Place (outside the Guildhall) on Friday 19 June at 6pm. This will be the first time the team has actually got on the bike, so it could be interesting in front of the assembled press! We're stopping in Long Eaton on Friday night. (10 miles) On Saturday we're hoping to set off around 7am, skirting round the north-west of Nottingham, but going through Hucknall, Mansfield, Worksop and Blyth. We'll go to the east of Doncaster and are aiming to spend the night in the Thorne area. (70 miles) On Sunday, we're heading for Snaith, Selby, Cawood and Naburn. Depending on how knackered/late we are, we'll then either take up BornTooLate's offer of getting on the cyclepath at the bottom of his garden or we'll stay on the road through Fulford and cycle through the centre of York. (30 miles) Whilst we are trying to avoid major roads, we want to be seen arriving! Hopefully we'll make it to the rally in one piece and before everyone else has gone home. I look forward to seeing you all there. Re: The York Cycle Show 2009.

The 1930 pack might be a bit thirsty, having waited nearly 80 years... ;-) PhilT - if you do come down the Fulford Road, and are heading for the Racecourse, you won't need to come through the middle of York (unless you want to!). I think you can turn left down Broadway and get through to the riverside cycle path (not down St Oswald's, there's a barrier you won't get by for sure - anyone know about Broadway?), and then over the Millennium Bridge and you're nearly there... You know the most impressive thing about Petes map for me was that he probably knew the order of the planets from memory. Re: The York Cycle Show 2009.

Date: June 18, 2009 12:10AM Dont know about Riccal but Naburn Station are all stocked up ready, and open all weekend! (blatant advert there - i will await my invoice!) Re: The York Cycle Show 2009.

I'll be at the rally. I'll be riding up tomorrow, arriving sometime mid afternoon. See y'all there. :-) Re: The York Cycle Show 2009.

I know a Maximus trike can get through them.... If I had a baby elephant, it could help me wash the car. If I had a car. Also often found on www.cyclechat.co.uk Re: The York Cycle Show 2009.

Date: June 18, 2009 05:33PM RE: The conference bike ride. I've just taken a look at your route on the website, There is a really good cafe at the sherwood forest craft center on the north edge of Edwinstowe when you get there. Looking at your route, you'll need a break by then - your taking in some hilly roads! Re: The York Cycle Show 2009.

Date: June 18, 2009 11:47PM Milly bridge is irrelevant cos the CB wont go through bottom of Broadway, Maple Grove, St oswalds or hospital fields! Looks like its Skeldergate bridge for you guys! Or go through Bishopthorpe of course. Re: The York Cycle Show 2009.

The trouble with Bish is getting across the river, isn't it - will they get on and off the bike path to take them over the Naburn bridge? Academic now, since I think they're en route.... Date: June 19, 2009 03:51PM 6pm Friday was the departure time from Derby wasn't it?
But the team may all be 'limbering up' in "The Standing Order"... Re: The York Cycle Show 2009.
Posted by: Borntoolate (IP Logged)
Date: June 19, 2009 04:29PM Well it may be too late, but if any of the team can read this...
go through Naburn village, towards York. Before the bridge, there is a white cottage on right. Turn in, and then keep left and go all the way up the long gravel drive (thats ours). If nobody is in at the Station House, push the bike round to your left, between the house and the little shed, and the caravan. You're on the track! Go to your left, and ride, till Bishy. When the track becomes a housing estate (small, quiet, genteel) follow the road and into the village centre. Go Left (Sim Balk Lane) and next right (Church Road) then left at 'T' and youre en route to the Rally!!! Or go through the village if you need the Co-op shop. Station House is open as Cyclists cafe all weekend, with barbie/party on Saturday eve. It's 4 miles along Route 65 to Selby. Re: The York Cycle Show 2009.

Date: June 20, 2009 06:05PM Seeing as the covered walkway is closed of (appart from the loo's) where are we meeting? Re: The York Cycle Show 2009.
Posted by: peter (IP Logged)
Date: June 20, 2009 06:33PM Outside the trade show entrance at 7:30 but we'll also sweep by the toilets near the walkway and past the entrance road so that anyone waiting anywhere doesn't miss it! Re: The York Cycle Show 2009.

Date: June 20, 2009 06:39PM Seeing as the Slyway doesn't sport nobblies or floats for that matter I'll meet you at the road entrance Re: The York Cycle Show 2009.

Date: June 22, 2009 12:05AM Well, we made it. Using the bit-of-string-on-a-map method, I've just calculated a grand total of 108 miles (plus a bit extra entertaining the kids on Friday night) in around fifteen hours. Thanks for all the route advice - in the end we came straight up the A19 (apologies to anyone caught in the tailback!!!) through Fulford and across the river by Clifford's Tower.
Sorry I didn't get to meet any more of you, but my lift wanted to get going. So after tea with the dignitaries and a few photo-calls (I hope you managed to get us Peter), it was back down the motorway. Thanks to Iain, Daniel and Trevor at Cosybike for all your support, the Black Dog Inn at Camblesforth for letting us camp in their back garden, Susan for the great send-off party and not forgetting Nigel, whose crazy idea it was in the first place. PS: In the pub on Saturday night, a lady showed me a copy of The Sun. Apparently, a team of Royal Engineers are planning a conference bike ride, starting on July 11th. Just for the record lads, it's already been done! Re: The York Cycle Show 2009.

Date: June 22, 2009 08:19AM Had a great time, although let down a bit by the weather mid-day on the Saturday. My bullet cam also went a bit tempromental and then died so did not get as much footage as I had hoped but I will edit what I have down and make a youtube vid. Sorry, no footage of me riding the new Trice velomobile down the A64(T) Re: The York Cycle Show 2009.

Date: June 22, 2009 11:53AM Excellent weekend , so good to meet so many, new and old. The food was excellent.
Just one thing to complain about to the CTC, the ride back from the Minster on Sunday; No police/traffic control. Mass start lead to several incidents , especially to Geoff, you just can't let kids off the lead in amongst slow/medium speed riders and cars. Re: The York Cycle Show 2009.

Shambles. I don't know why we had no marshalls - if it was a question of cost, fair enough, but they really should have changed the route - I regularly ride between the Minster and the Racecourse, and I wouldn't choose that route for either for fun or speed normally. Ironically, making us wait at the red lights and so on, meant we caused a hold up for longer than when we are waved through and the traffic held up for us.... Anyway, apart from that, good time had as usual, nice to see so many Velo Visionaries, and I picked up some more bits for the Galaxy rebuild. If I had a baby elephant, it could help me wash the car. Date: June 22, 2009 06:29PM Yep, a good weekend save for the ride back form the Minster. The committee need to sort a different route or pay for the rozzers to police the traffic. I saw at least two irate motorists causing problems.
