The ground anchore are really good, and I had forgotten about them.
Littlelerch, you tour on a fixie? Thighs of titanium, mate!
Befriending shopkeepers is a good idea. In towns, thats fine, or the local police station, but out of town, the risk diminishes with the population, but its the luggage that's vulnerable. I suppose the only answer is to take things of value or importance with you in a carry-bag (I use a handlebar bag from Gilles Berthoud, with lots of little pockets). If thieves rifle your panniers and find only smelly laundry (good to put that on top!), they shouldnt be too keen on taking them home!

Well done guys.

Bend in a small road.

There is my young lady on the left, just past that giant piece of ice.

Most of the snow is gone now but more is threatened for the weekend.

Now we can see the earth we have snowdrops and hundreds more bulbs in the garden.

That means when we start clearing the garden for the summer, I will get more slapped wrists than usual for standing on everything.

> Is this a sign that recumbent trikes are becoming
> mainstream?
>
> There are a lot more on the roads, nearly every
> DFer who stops to chat tells me he's seen at least
> one other on his rides. Given the numbers produced
> world wide we're a long way from becoming a
> significant minority but maybe there is not too
> far to go before there are more recumbent trikes
> than tandems in use. I suspect we have already
> passed the number of DF trikes in regular use.

I see lots of cyclists and pedestrians who tell me that they've seen another recumbent triker in the area. On closer enquiry it turns out to be me. Clearly they don't think the same person is likely to be seen in areas 40 miles apart!

Trying to fit a mudguard to the new trike, I made a sort of bracket to fix the bottom edge of the mudguard to the back of the main tube. I needed some metal I could bend into the right shape, and put holes in. I found a steel drinks can at work, and cut a bit out.

It worked, but it was ugly, and I suspect would have broken fairly soon. Fortunately, the ever resourceful (and owner of much proper metalwork equipment) Mr Eland has since replaced it with a very neat piece of machined aluminium, and hopefully he'll bung a picture up soon....

Or have you gained a peg leg since I saw you last, and used it on that?

I think Borntoolate's point is that it's not just recumbents, but all bikes, upright, recumbent.. even prone I suppose, if anyone has one...

I like coming up behind pedestrians on shared paths, slowly of course, and dinging my bell, and seeing their faces when they look round and don't see me until they look down and I'm at ankle height... ;-)

BTW, while we're on the subject of using up cloth and stuff, look out for hi-vis vests in poundshops (and assuming there is an equivalent overseas...). The vest themselves are often very thin and low quality, but each one has over a metre of good retroreflective tape sewn on, which can easily be unpicked and sewn or stuck to other stuff like panniers, or to make cuff or ankle bands.

Removing the seat might be enough too. For me the height of the Kettwiesel seat or the height of the QNT headrest would be the limiting factors in a lower roofed car. Length wise they both go in, albeit a bit on the tight side.
