I have just concluded a bout of conversations with "More Than" insurance.

(Please note the irony)

They were wanting £38 for two bikes covered,- one of which is an electric bike.
The value of the cover was £400..ie (200 each) and there would be a £50 excess.

Needless to say I got a better deal with 'CycleGuard'

Hope this is helpful.

Hi Longbow,

Just moved your message to be its own thread, rather than a reply to my announcement.

No experience of that machine myself - but FWIW quite a few of the ones I have tried do seem a bit on the noisy side. If it's a regular buzz then probably normal - horrible grinding noises, not so much!

Might be worth trying on the Pedelecs forum - more chance of finding a fellow owner there perhaps.

Cheers!

Hello ,I am a new owner of a Batavus eletric bike which has proved very successful in performance but seems a little noisy under power ,I have contacted the importer who tells me this is normal .
I would be interested to hear from any other owner with comments concerning this .
Also I would welcome any independent test reports about this model as the only one I can find is that given by the importer .

We have just renewed our household insurance and included our bikes, but this year we have moved to a different and cheaper insurer. They are happy to cover the risk up to a maximum of £2,500 for pedal cycles, but there is a condition attached. "An engine (of any kind) is NOT to be fitted to the machine" - I suppose this means I'll not be getting an electric assist again this year...My wife will surely smile!

Does anyone else have similar restrictions on their household policy?

That is truly bizarre. The notion of using torch batteries to power a bike had never ocurred to me, but hats off to whoever it was for doing the experiment. I would love to have seen a picture of the unit driven to thermal meltdown, just because I'm that sort of person, but on a more serious note, the relative economics of that versus a conventional battery are quite interesting.

For me, another consideration would have to be the environmental issues, as small batteries driven this far beyond their intended performance would probably not acheive their quoted 1000 charge cycles, or whatever the manufacturer claims. They would therefore have to be replaced more often.

It's occasionally struck me that were I to make a DIY system then an attractive option might be just to use lots of NiMh AA batteries like e.g. some of the ones here:

http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/default.php?cat=3&type=3060&man=0&filterwords=&go=SEARCH&comp=

Get some holders like e.g.

http://cpc.farnell.com/pro-power/23vb103b/battery-holder-10xaa-snap-sxs-opp/dp/BT03718

And as the current AA crop seem to go up to 2.9 Ah for about a fiver for four (or even less if buying in bulk), you get a 12V 2.9 Ah pack for about £13. Measuring some of the ones I have suggests that AAs weigh about 27g each so it's about 300g in all per pack.

Then simply stack packs in series or parallel to increase capacity and/or voltage... and preferably put them in some suitable waterproof enclosure...

Would have to investigate how well they would deliver high currents etc - chances are the wiring on those cheap holders would need beefing up.

Advantages would seem to be
- Cheap - AAs are mass market so competitive pricing
- Can easily upgrade to higher capacities as better AAs are developed.
- Easy to replace any bad cells

Disadvantages might be
- reliability - holders are cheap and nasty, rely on spring pressure for contact
- Bulk and weight for the capacity no doubt well behind newer purpose made packs but then a lot cheaper :-)
- Consumer AAs probably not the finest quality, might not last long...

Could charge them all at once still in the holders - or it would be relatively easy to remove the cells individually every so often to charge individually or to test.

Bet it's been tried...

I'm rather looking forward to the electric bike magazine having had a go at making my own from a kit I got from ebay.

I put some pictures on my blog here:

http://blog.tish-n-jasp.info/blog/_archives/2009/5/19/4191892.html

Overall impressions are that it all hinges on the battery technology. The lead acid ones I got with my kit are cheap but immensly heavy and only good for 10 or 15 miles. I guess lithium-ion would be much better, but you get what you pay for!
