Momentum picks up the Spoke'n'Word baton

Vancouver's Spoke'n'Word was, until its demise earlier this year, one of the wittiest, sharpest and generally best campaigning magazines I've read. Now, the team behind it have come up with a new magazine, Momentum, to be launched in April. It'll be distributed free in Vancouver, but will be available everywhere, and the publishers are seeking 'founder' subscriptions.

What else can I say that 'One Less Carmen' doesn't say below in her inimitable style? Well, Velo Vision and Momentum will live together in total harmony - between us, as Carmen put it, we can take over the world! I'd definitely recommend subscribing to both ;-)

Incidentally, Carmen's also the force behind the 'Dinosaurs against Fossil Fuel' - a dinosaur herd (?) who protest the global oil economy. Slogan: Extinction stinks!

There's also lots of interesting projects described on the Emerald City Communications pages - that's Carmen's PR company.

Carmen's message in full below:

Dear Bike-Minded Friends,

As you may have heard, Vancouver is about to gain MOMENTUM: "a magazine for self-propelled thinkers." It's about new ideas and active solutions, and it's about time.

MOMENTUM will pick up where the Spoke'n'Word, Vancouver's cherished and sadly missed alternative-transportation quarterly, left off. Our mandate is to provide news, practical information, and amusement for people who think and who act. We aim to inspire individuals to action, and to strengthen a global community of forward-thinking people. We hope to coax a few people out of their cars and into the world. And, moreover, we intend to pursue these lofty goals with humour, funk, and kick-ass attitude.

For many self-propelled thinkers, the bicycle is a powerful symbol. Certainly it gives us pleasure, but it's more than a toy. Surely it moves us from here to there, but it's not just a reliable piece of hardware.

To bike-minded people the bicycle embodies technology at its most democratic, elegant, and life-enhancing. It helps us live in harmony with the urban environment. It inspires passion and creativity. It turns us on, and we want to turn you on to MOMENTUM.

MOMENTUM's cycling-related topics may encompass practical articles on gear, clothing, safety and technique; local or international cycling news; sports and health; commuter and working cyclists; bike culture and fetishism; and on and on and on. We'll have comics, fiction, humour, and lots of photos.

And beyond the bicycle, we are open to a range of environmental and cultural ideas - from land use planning to guerrilla gardening, from alternative energy to biotechnology, from road-ripping to break-dancing.

It all adds up to MOMENTUM, and it's not only for cyclists. It's for bike-minded individuals of many modes.

MOMENTUM will be bi-monthly, and we are aiming to launch our first issue in April, with fanfare and a great party. But we need your help. We aim to secure foundation sponsorship from various sources, and to build up a strong advertiser base. But we need some cash to get started, so we are asking you to consider helping us out by becoming a founding subscriber to MOMENTUM right now.

Founding subscribers contribute a minimum of CDN $50 ($100 for institutions). This gets you one year's subscription, fervent acknowledgement in the mag, and a receipt which self-employed types will no doubt find a way to write off their taxes (send money now, and claim the deduction for the year 2000!).

Plus, the editorial team will speak your name with reverence and love, and you will receive 50,000 frequent-flyer karma points to ward off flat tires and global apocalypse.

There's one more good reason to subscribe. MOMENTUM will be distributed for free throughout the Lower Mainland, at cafés, shops, local hangouts, and events. But if you live outside that area, it could be hard to find; and experience with the Spoke has shown us how quickly 10,000 magazines can vanish. If you subscribe, you'll never miss out on an issue.

We're very excited about MOMENTUM. We think it will change our world, or at least shake it up a bit. Please join us and help start the ball rolling.

With sincere thanks,

The MOMENTUM Collective: Carmen Mills, Joelle Paton, and Amy Walker

(Please send cheques or money orders to MOMENTUM, c/o Emerald City Communications, 205-425 Carrall St., Vancouver, BC, V6B 6E3.) PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR NAME, E-MAIL, AND PHYSICAL ADDRESS. If you'd like to drop a return message to [email protected] to let us know the proverbial cheque is in the mail, we'd be pleased to hear it.)
