Bicycle images live and kicking in UK cinemas

I took a rare break from the Velo Vision grindstone on Friday and went to see 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'. Top film. Before the film started, though, there were some nice adverts featuring bicycles.

In the first, for a new posh sort of tea called Tschai, a robed monk passes sublimely through the traffic, symbolically rising above the cares of the world as, presumably, they'd like to think you would do, should you inhale the vapours rising from their tea. Unconsciously it's a rather good advert for cycling through traffic jams :-)

The second one to catch my eye was an advert for Siemens, well-known electronics giant who didn't seem to be advertising anything in particular - perhaps just trying to generate a bit of positive image. Depicting 'inspiration' they had an executive type finding freedom from city life in the exhilaration of MTBing through city streets - though the final twist makes you wonder if they can't help falling into the 'irresponsible courier' stereotype as he near-misses a couple of pedestrians, one the obligatory old granny type.

See the film, too - it's good! The adverts will probably only be on in UK cinemas right now, though it wouldn't surprise me if the Siemens one at least goes international.

Nice to see that the bike is still associated in the minds of some advertising agencies with freedom, independence and spiritual enlightenment.
