Spokesfest plans for 2001 firm up

The organisers of Spokesfest, the annual cycling and human power event held in Leicester, UK, have updated their website with news of this year's plans - and they've given a kind mention to Velo Vision. Also, check out the pedal-powered radio station.

Spokesfest 2001 takes place on the weekend 27th - 30th July, and Roger and Simon, the genial organisers, seem to have convinced city centre managers to let them do racing around the city centre - should be some great HPV publicity. Once again, there should be both boats and aircraft HPVs on show. Pedal car racing is definitely on the cards, and their specially-developed four-lane human-powered Scalectrix should be fun!

If you can't wait, there's an earlier event at Belvoir Castle on the 19th-20th May. "The Duke of Rutland has personally asked you all around to his place" according to the Spokesfest site - check it out for more details.

I (Pete) had a great time at last year's event - heartily recommended. You can read a brief report on my personal website - under the 'tandem tour' heading.

Roger and Simon are definitely HPV people. Here's one of their previous efforts - it's not quite clear which one of the two did this:

"The pedal powered radio station used my tandem with four bottle dynamos wired in series pairs via bridge rectifiers to give about 13v 800mA dc which was sufficient to piower Radio Leicester's mobile transmitter to relay the signal back to the main studio for a 2 hour live broadcast. The stand on the tandem was made to allow the whole set up to be pedalled around while trasnsmitting or to relocate for the next interview. Not recommended in a thunderstorm!"
