Could this amazing new invention be...a bicycle?Check out the bizarre story of Dean Kamen and his invention that impressed Steve Jobs (head of Apple) so much he said "If enough people see the machine you wont have to convince them to architect cities around it. Itll just happen." Maybe he's hit on a really efficient form of personal transport...? The full article is on MSNBC's website (click to read it). It describes how a new book is being proposed to tell the story of 'IT' - some revolutionary new invention from Dean Kamen, whose previous work includes an off-road wheelchair, the iBot. There'a a good article on the iBot here and it does look very clever. He's apparently hugely impressed various industry magnates with the idea, and some of the quotes are extraordinary ('as significant as the PC'). There are just a few clues as to what the invention actually is (or will be, when it's launched sometime in 2002). It sounds like it should be something involving personal transport... it must be something pervasive, if cities are going to be re-architected around it. I did check my calendar - but April 1 is a few months away yet. But read the article yourselves. It could, just, be a bicycle - and they hype an elaborate wind-up! Final quote from Kamen: "It will be an alternative to products that are dirty, expensive, sometimes dangerous and often frustrating, especially for people in the cities. If it is - and they were just doing this to publicise cycling as a much-overlooked solution - it would be inspired! Posted on 11 January 2001 Your comments ...
