Stolen Greenspeed sparks worldwide alert

A 'tall, well-built man' failed to return with a Greenspeed recumbent trike after he took it for a test ride. An appeal by the manufacturer, Ian Sims of Greenspeed, put HPV enthusiasts worldwide on the lookout.

The trike, with frame number GTR 20200446, is an especially large-framed unit - ideal for the thief, who is described as being around 6' 4" tall. Joking confidently about the difficulty he had finding things to fit him, he took off on the trike and disappeared.

Following the appeal for information, which was circulated widely on the internet, it was suggested that the thief might be none other than Stuart Olds. Olds was a recumbent thief who operated in Europe, stealing and then touring on recumbents purloined from various specialist dealers.

He was eventually caught after a photo and article about him were published in Bike Culture Quarterly 6 (April 1995), including a description of his height (6' 5") and that he stuttered. A few months later, an alert bike shop owner became suspicious and phoned BCQ's distributor in Germany, Kalle Kalkhoff, who advised him to call the police.
The Greenspeed thief was, however, definitely not Olds. According to Ian Sims: "Yes, it certainly did cross my mind, but this guy was very confident in his speech, weighed about 100kg, and really did not match the photo in BCQ."

Ian Sims' full description of the machine follows:

It is a large frame, dark green Greenspeed GTR with yellow seat, number GTR 2020
0446. The frame number is punched on to a tag riveted underneath the rear of the
main tube.

It had the latest www.greenspeed.com.au stickers on it, but the older seven speed 11/30 IG rear cluster and RX 100 down bar levers on the bar ends, instead of the later 8 speed bar ends and 11/28 eight speed rear cluster. Cranks are the standard RX 100 52/42/30, and it has the normal Sachs/SRAM 3x7 rear hub. The rear rack is the standard black Rubis unit, and it also had a twin 10watt Smart light system, with a 7 led Basta tail light.
