Cruiser bikes make a semi-recumbent splash

Are your friends put off recumbent cycling because of the image problem? A UK company has just started importing some semi-recumbent chopper bikes to ease them gently towards a recumbent position.

Goude Design are probably better-known for the Indicator Glove - which incorporate thumbswitch-activated LED turn indicators on the back.

Now they are also importing 'PHAT Cycles', from Huntington Beach California. If you don't like the 'ladies draped over bicycles' school of marketing, don't click that link to their website.

Not much of a story you may be thinking - but I wonder if this sort of machine could be a 'back door' route to some rather comfortable cycling, especially for the elderly or for those with limited limb mobility. The layout of the Phat machines is rather reminiscent of vehicles designed for easy access - made so that you can get a foot flat on the ground when you stop, instead of balancing on tiptoe. Thus:

Of course, the marketing image is all wrong for this audience. But it might be worth a look - they look well enough made out of cromoly.

UK stockists include BikeFix and Dirt & Dreams in London and 'The Edge' in Chester.

  • Another bike, that could be a cure for sweaty armpits.
On a Harley chooper, such handlebars are also known a "Apehangers"!
BTW the Raleigh Chopper is history.
For comfort and incredibly classy good looks I ride a Pedersen replica.
