Cyclemagic comes to Belvoir

News of the upcoming Belvoir (pronounced 'Beaver') Castle Alternative Transport Weekend, 30th/31st August 2003

Simon of Cyclemagic, the organisation formerly known as Spokesfest informs me:

*******

Belvoir Castle Alternative Transport Weekend, 30th/31st August 2003

The event takes place at Belvoir castle near Grantham.

Plans so far:

  • Camping Friday, Saturday,Sunday nights as before by the Castle walls (those of you who came before will remember the fantastic view and the sunrise, and the peacocks).

  • Bike ride on Saturday, possible trips are a micro-brewery visit or a cheese makers. Estate roads also open for general messing about Sunday - public events, display of HPVs on the North Terrace along with other alternative transport exhibits, also family cycling around the estate grounds (public invited to bring their bikes along) or just do your own thing.

  • Also a meeting of the Renault Frere Club (Veteran Renaults) on the Saturday lunchtime, and some tanks and hovercraft on the Sunday. I guess a tank is pretty alternative transport.

  • We hope to have the special 'ring the bell on the castle wall 3 times for the butler to bring you breakfast' service again.

  • It would be useful to have an idea of who may be interested in coming along so I can give the Castle staff an idea of numbers. Email me on [email protected] - perhaps include preference for beer or cheese making ride?

There's a report on the previous one at

  • Shouldn't that be Spokesfest return as Cyclemagic?

  • From: Peter Eland ([email protected]) on 03 December 2002
  • Dunno - no doubt Roger or Simon will read this soon and enlighten us ;-)

  • From: Seamus ([email protected]) on 03 December 2002
  • FRACK!!!

Why couldn't it be the same time of year as before?
I know. It's a conspiracy. They've deliberatly planned it like this 'cos they know I'll be out of the country in August.

  • From: simon sprocketbender ([email protected]) on 03 December 2002
  • Yes, it's Cyclemagic I guess - Spokesfest is now reserved for the festival in Leicester. We tried to get the same time of year as before but there's no arguing with the Duchess. After all, it's her castle.
The brewery trip is winning so far.

  • Changed :-)

  • It's in my diary. I'll be there with the Borders clan. Could I have a length of castle washing line to display a few bags ?

  • From: Legs Larry ([email protected]) on 04 December 2002
  • Doppelfrack! It's the same weekend as the HPV World Championships :-(

  • From: simon sprocketbender ([email protected]) on 04 December 2002
  • I know - I tried for a different date but it was already scheduled. Might be able to change it for 2004!
Is it me or are people having their messages truncated? Or is it jst the way I walk?

  • From: Rob ([email protected]) on 04 December 2002
  • I'm doomed never to make to to Beaver Castle... Summer Hols in Germany and The World Championships it is I'm afraid.

    Are you racing Seamus???

    Rob.

  • From: Seamus (seamustuffetc) on 05 December 2002
  • Racing?

    Are you mad?

  • Crowded weekend!
    BPCC double header in Bracknell.
Otherwise we would have been there as well.
Maybe next year 'cos it is a lovely area to spend a weekend in.

  • From: simon sprocketbender ([email protected]) on 05 December 2002
  • Well, they are keen to have pedal car racing, so that might be a lever to get a different date in 2004. Or we might be able to do a pedal car race at another time. We'll be inspecting the estate more closely prior to the event, so we'll see if there's a possible course. Could just use the North Terrace, but it goes past the kitchen...which would be difficult...for me, anyway.

  • At Last! an evennt I can take my vintage Renault pedal powered tank to.

  • Simon, you could do a ride into nearby Grantham to see the birthplace of Maggie Thatcher.

  • From: A. Tory ([email protected]) on 06 December 2002
  • Presumably you are referring to our most nobble Briton, Her Most Esteemed Eminence Margaret Thatcher Saviour of the United Kingdom and former Prime Minister in most troubled times when she saved us all from the evil communists in the steel and coal industies and at the same time did a great sevice to the environment by shutting down so much of the polluting steel works and coal fired power stations.

God Bless Maggie. Hurrah! Hurrah! Hurrah!

  • From: jeremy ([email protected]) on 06 December 2002
  • Grantham museum has (or had in 1995) a collection of Maggie Thatcher's clothes.
    She must have been cold.
This was possibly the most interesting thing there at the time if you really like that sort of thing.
Lucky I managed to get myself a final year project centred around the Grantham canal which gave me the excuse of cycling from Nottingham University all over that area and NOT feeling guilty that it was all financed by the hard working tax payer of Great Britain. (Except my faithful "Peugeot 500 Competition" racing bike which I was unable to obtain a grant for...)

  • From: simon sprocketbender ([email protected]) on 06 December 2002
  • Hardworking tax payer? Which one was that, then? I was one of those, once. Now I just pay tax. The Grantham Canal is being restored in parts, although probably not going to be navigable all the way.
