Issue 8 is in the building

It turns up a day early - again - and the first copies are going out today :-)

I'll only be able to get non-UK subscriber copies out today, and maybe advertiser and some contributor copies, as I'm waiting for the arrival tomorrow of various inserts which need to go out with all UK subscriber copies. This includes a feedback questionnaire, which I'd be most grateful if readers could fill in and return.

The issue is looking good. You can read the preview of the contents for now, and in a month or so I'll put up a few taster articles as PDFs, in a full online version.

Incidentally the Issue 7 and testimonials pages on this site have recently been updated, and I've also revamped my personal website at www.eland.org.uk.

  • "feedback questionnaire"?

Is that something like a subscription renewal form at all?

  • From: The Printer ([email protected]) on 03 December 2002
  • Heres a few questions off the questionaire;

    1. Name.

    2. Address.

    3. Method of payment; cash, cheque, credit card.

  • I shall be up at the crack of dawn tomorrow the 5th December 2002, to catch the postman!
Looking forward to a good in depth read of those extra pages.
    All the best,
    John.

  • Oh dear me! No Velovision today-anyone else got one yet.?
    Regards,
    John.

  • I'd expect most people will get theirs tomorrow, and some on Saturday or even Monday. UK copies are posted second class mail, which takes at least a couple of days to reach its destination. All non-UK copies go airmail, which also takes a few days.

If you've not got yours by Friday next week please give me a call on 01904 438 224 and I'll resend - a few go missing each time despite being correctly addressed.

  • MMMMmmmmmmm,
I thought that a First Class item such as Velovision would be mailed out First Classd!
Second rate mail. Takes more than two days.
    Kind regards and awaitin .
    John. (First Class).

  • You're probably not aware of this but 1st Class Post costs more than 2nd Class Post.

I would imagine that the editorial staff of,"Velovision," are doing all they can to keep the cost of subscriptions as low as possible. This would, of course, be helped amply by making use of the 2nd Class service in preference to the 1st Class postal service with a considerable saving over a 12 month period.

  • Bet if my copy was sent first class it'd still get scrunched up :-(

Glad I don't personally pay for it :-)

  • From: john.shackford ([email protected]) on 07 December 2002
  • Saturday am-its arrived! It must be bigger because Peter said so but if it is the 'Buyers Guide' taking space-then its not really bigger-is it?
    Subscription time-again? So soon?
Only a Full year available now ?
    Ah well..
    John.

  • Some of Pete's really keen subscribers turn up and collect their copy from the office. Why not take a quick trip to York and collect your pristine copy on the day it arrives in the office? :-P

  • From: Seamus ([email protected]) on 09 December 2002
  • Home from work on Friday there's a big brown envelope awaiting. Upon opening the first thing I noticed was two sheets of paper. I started to read the questionaire,"Name, address, method of payment." Oops. Wrong one. Stuff that.

Quick look through the mag to see who I know; RtH, Paul Stobbs, Jase, tiny pic of me.

Hey Rog. We got a draw. One pic each and one article each.

Would that by chance be, Some of Pete's really keen subscribers WHO LIVE IN YORK ?

  • Good issue. A good mixture of articles, all interesting. The photography is finally up to the standard I expect.

Some previous issues have featured possibly the worst images I've ever seen printed - both technically (way too fuzzy) and artistically (if I see your garden table again I'll scream).

I was very disappointed at the D'Tek caption competition. The winning line was rubbish. Although I suppose it got the word 'BOB' in it.
My caption was "Seamus was finding trade disappointingly slow on his first day of being a human bike stand".
There. Much better I think you'll agree.

  • John:
    - re two-issue subs: still available, just ask or use the online shop. I took this off the form as it was only ever used by a handful of people, and simpler forms are better.

    Steve:
    - Thanks for photo comments. A new (or rather, secondhand) digital camera certainly helped for Issue 8, at least for the images we took ourselves. Contributed images can sometimes be a bit ropey, even though I often get people to have several goes at photographs in an attempt to get good ones. Photo guidelines (100k PDF) sent on request, contributions always most welcome.
    - Garden table? I wish I had a garden! ;-( Assuming you mean the one seen in e.g Issue 5 p.28, it's actually just outside the office...
    - Caption competition: feel free to send Kevin at D-Tek some picture suggestions for this - my stock of even vaguely amusing pictures is swiftly running out.

    Cheers!

    Peter

  • Does anyone know any of the people who've won the Dtek competitions?

I don't recognise any of the names and I know virtually everyone on the 'alternative' cycling scene.

Is it perhaps possible that they're making up the names of these winners?

How much new trade do you think is generated by the ads? It would have to be a substantial amount to pay for the advertisements in the first place and secondly to cover the cost of the Bob Yak trailers.

  • From: Peter Eland ([email protected]) on 11 December 2002
  • Careful Matthew, you wouldn't want to be libellous...and you're skating pretty close.

Winner's names are supplied by D-Tek but most if not all of the winners in previous ads have also been subscribers to the mag, and I can therefore confirm that they are 'real people'.

    Regards,

    Peter

  • Issue 8, brilliant.
Read it cover to cover within a weekend despite moving house. Can I make a suggestion for the buyers guide section. Publicise the next topic to be featured either in the mag or here on the web-site. You might be able to get a feel for peoples best (or worst) products, photos and/or stories of the product in use.

    Cheers
    Jimbo

  • From: Matthew Brown ([email protected]) on 12 December 2002
  • Thanks Pete for confirming the existence of the prize winners. If you'd been unable to do so it would have been something to be concerned about.

Jimbo's suggestion is a good one; why write huge chunks when readers will happilly do it for you. Hmm. That doesn't at all sound the way it was meant to. You have access via this site and your subscibers a vast database of resource material on all aspoects of cycling so make use of it.

Open Road had a readers thingy where readers sent in their observations to be used in articles on; waterproofs, luggage, child transport.
