Jet power takes bike to over 80km/h...

More model aircraft jet engine craziness, this time from the Netherlands...

AMT Netherlands make (to quote) "small gas turbines for the propulsion of radio-controlled flying aircraft, experimental aircraft development, and in the military target and surveillance drone field. Our turbines are also used in many kinds of research and education projects at universities all over the world."

Of course, someone thought that a far more amusing idea would be to strap one to the back of a bicycle and see how fast it would go:

http://www.amtjets.com/gallery_jetbike_md.htm

It's been done several times before of course, on a Windcheetah trike in the UK and as we reported some time ago, on a Vision recumbent in the USA.

Thanks to Doug Chinn for spotting this.

  • Hello,
I got one last year. Why do you think I am so fast? Seriously though folks-is this Velo power or Motor transport. Watch out Peter you will be getting requests for advertising from 4x4 car companies if you don't watch out!
Best Wishes for Christmas and the New Year.
    John.

  • Jeez!

"It's been done before" - yes, and it's been done a lot neater too! 80km/h on a BMX? With a polythene bomb strapped between your legs? Think I'd prefer the WindCheetah version, if it's all the same to everyone else...

  • Yup - you would have thought that a €3000 motor would be better suited to a racing recumbent or something... I wonder what a BMX's stability is like at 80km/h? ;-)

  • Just seeing if this still works.

    My lifes work...
    http://uk.geocities.com/mikstar123/films.html

...is getting out of hand and threatening to destroy my life or was that the heart attack?

  • I've just started to add a section on Documentaries/Travelogues mainly because Ross Lowell's video, "The Wind in my Soul," is worthy of mention on any cycling films page.

Hands up all those who knew that Ross had got an Oscar for his film lighting designs?

    Not me.

    Seamus. Happy Christmas etc.

  • MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE.

  • MotorveloVision? Isn't it sad how some people seem to think it's a good idea to add an engine to a pedal cycle.

I'd much rather be riding Diablo II.....

  • Eeeh, dunno what happened there... However, what I wanted to say was that Ross was the first person of the filmic persuasion to use cloth-stylee adhesive tape for securing Electrical Stuff, and should therefore be beatified as the Man Who Gave Gaffer Tape Its Name

  • From: Seamus (smarty pants) on 30 December 2002
  • So why isn't it called Ross's Tape then? Lowell's Tape doesn't so sound good.

Maybe that's what he got his Acadamy Award for.

  • Disturbingly on my webspace clever stuff provider...
Top search word used to find this page 47.03% typed "quicksilver movie cult kevin bacon"

Over three hundred hits so far so how come nearly 150 folk typed in,"quicksilver movie cult kevin bacon" ?????

Heck! I'm off to Google to check it out. Over 60 films now

  • Why does this kind of stupid gimmick pop up every half decade?
There is no reson why to do such a stupid stunt.
For the uninformed, there is an amazing thing called a motorbike.
    It's been around since 1896.
If you want to ride a bicycle, buy a bicycle.
    if not, buy a motorbike.
The reson why I ride a bike, is because I enjoy getting places on my own power.

  • From a design point of view what’s wrong with this bike?
1.Fueltank is unsafe non crash resistant plastic canister secured with a bungeecord.
2.the engine is mounted on a very crude and unsafe looking rack made of flimsy looking flat pieces of metal.
3.The piece of sheet metal in front of the engine looks like it has some sharp edges.
4.There is no protection behind the engine, or in front, like a cage. What happens, at top speed, is parts of clothing of the rider, is sucked into the engine?

  • Perhaps he just like playing with jet engines? If I had a jet engine, I'd want to play with it....

  • From: . (.) on 13 January 2003
  • How about a bunging a jet engine on the back of John Jermy's boat? You could play at Bluebird then.
