Hurry along for the 2003 Ice HPV World ChampionshipShort notice I'm afraid, but if you can make it to South Center Lake, Lindstrom, Minnesota USA on Saturday January 25th, there's only one place to be... Mark Stonich writes (lightly edited by me): ***** 12th Annual Human Powered Ice Vehicle World Championship Full details at http://mnhpva.org/ice/Ice2003.html Last year we had 23 riders from Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin and MN. After an entertaining demonstration last year, we will have an new class, 'Rubber Only', which will race separately from the 'Open' class for those with traction aids. We had so much fun doing the demo races that two guys bought EZ3s so they could join us. So bring out your trikes and go "slip slidin' away". Actually, the class isn't limited to trikes, but clean lake ice doesn't have nearly as much grip as street ice, so running a two-wheeler probably isn't 'Plan A'. Traction will be lousy, but it will be for everyone else too. I'll even disconnect my two-wheel drive to level the playing field. Don't think you're fit enough to race? Due to limited traction, this will be more of a skill event, than a horsepower one. Too lazy to stud up some tires? Then 'Rubber Only' is the class for you. No road salt on the lake ice: so you won't rot out your aluminum bits. Don't own a trike? An EZ3 costs about as much a Brian Baylis paint job. Got a heavy trike, or body? No hills on South Center Lake. Last year two of us ran trikes and found that "rubber only" doesn't slow you down at all in the flying start 100 meters. Not poking holes in the ice saves horsepower. The drag races were another story ;-) Mark Stonich, BikeSmith Design and Fabrication: http://bikesmithdesign.com ******** You can read about a previous such event in Velo Vision Issue 1.
