Penny owners called to LeicesterHigh-wheelers, pennyfarthings, ordinaries - whatever you call them, if you own one your help is requested to help set a new world record... This press release below reaches me via Roger of Spokesfest/Cyclemagic: ******** World Record 'Penny Stack' 27th July 2003. On Sunday 27th July 2003 the UK will attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records 'Penny Stack'. For those who do not know what a Penny Stack is, it is a freestanding line of ordinaries with the rider in the saddle, which must remain stationary for 3 minutes and is ratified by official judges. The 'Penny Stack' was granted the status of an official World Record in 1996 when the Desford Lane Pedallers VCC organised a 58 machine stack and established the first world record at Snibston Discovery Park in Leicestershire: This record stood until 2000 when Tasmanian Velocipede Society established a new world record of 69 machines only to be broken this year by 'The Wheelmen' of the USA who currently hold the record of 83 machines. The gauntlet is once again been thrown down and it is time for the record to return Great Britain. All ordinary owners are asked to support this record attempt by joining in with as many machines that are available either rideable or not, original or replica. The World Record attempt will take place at the Abbey Park in Leicester on the Sunday 27th July 2003 during Spokefest, the Leicester Festival of Cycling, which will also host the British One Mile Ordinary Championship and the National HPV races. Entry for the 'Penny Stack' are free and there will be free parking and refreshments for those participating. For further information contact Madeleine Pickering on 0116 284 1881 or email [email protected]. Please put this date in your diary and don't forget your camera! ********* Update 4th Feb: Roger informs me: "Those pesky Americans have decided to make a rival attempt to our bid for a new Penny Stack world record - on the same day, Sunday 27th July! All adds to the drama I suppose :-)" Posted on 04 February 2003 Your comments ...
