Own a Moulton? Join the ride...

Over 150 Moultons are expected to cycle in convoy into London 11th May, recreating a historic journey...

Brian Perkins of the MBC informs me:

*****

On 11th May, the Moulton Bicycle Club are performing a commemorative ride from Cardiff to London to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of John Woodburn's road record on a prototype Moulton.

His machine at that time was a 'gas-pipe' version as the Moulton bicycle had not yet gone into production. The company needed a good start and Woodburn's success ensured media coverage to set sales roaring. He did the 162 miles in about six and a half hours, averaging 26mph, even though he was not an especial enthusiast for all aspects of the machine's design. John does have an enduring fondness for the Moulton, however, and he readily agreed to take part in this year's re-run, riding the last stretch from Gerrard's Cross to Central London (Marble Arch).

The real coup for the run is that we will be using the original forty-one year old Moulton Speed in the commemorative ride, to be ridden in relay by Club members, and Woodburn himself. Many more Moulton cyclists will join us at Gerrards Cross for the final twenty miles. It is not unreasonable to expect 150 odd Moultons to be ridden into London in a throng, which should be a rare and exciting sight. We will assemble at Marble Arch, and proceed from there to a reception at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, where Alex Moulton should be present.

More details of the ride, and how to take part, are to be found at www.moultoneers.net/woodburn/index.html

  • Puts me in mind of Cyclefest last year and the bike that should have won the Most Beautiful Bicycle Competition, which I'd been asked to judge...

"The clear winner was Pat Strachan's exquiste, blue. Moulton Speed Six, so sensually suggestive of speed."

Unfortunately, for no good reason, The organisers had barred themselves from the competition.

  • The link doesn't work - try putting /index.html after the woodburn and it should work.

  • Anyone from the York area fancy going down together? If more than a handful want to go, we'd have to juggle for train spaces, but I'd hire a minibus or van if a few Moultoneers were interested. Let me know.

  • A phalanx of York Moultoneers sounds like a good idea, I might well be up for that.

  • To avoid long columns of arrangements on Peter's site, anyone interested mail me direct. Include "Moulton" in the text body to direct the message to the apt place. Ta.
