Round-up

Cycling prevents breast cancer; US folding bike event update; Jack Lauterwasser passes away, and Byke Kultuur Never 16 is out...

I'm right in the middle of doing Issue 9, so not much time for web updates I'm afraid. Here's a few items of news in brief:

  • The BBC are reporting that regular cycling can reduce the risk of breast cancer by up to a third:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/2743965.stm

although they do make it clear that it's not proven yet that cycling is of particular benefit above other forms of exercise. Still, it's been often proven that if the population took more regular exercise all sorts of problems would be alleviated - just one more benefit of a more cycle-friendly society :-)

  • This update just in about the USA folding bike event reported earlier.

UPDATE FOR the ROUND*UP USA small wheel/folder bike fest. May 16-17-18 2003, Philadelphia USA.

The list of bike makers planning to participate now includes: Airframe, Brompton, Burrobikes, Dahon, Breezer, Bike Friday, PBW, Moulton US, Birdy, Swift Folder, and more TBA ( Montague, Slingshot and Bazooka are all expected to sign on --still hoping to hear from Koga Miyata, Bernds and a few others)... Other sponsors include Timbuk2 (cycling bags) and BikeBox of Canada (a maker of compact-friendly bike trailers)....

Speakers/events still being arranged, but a Moulton talk, a Bike-on-Rail Excursion, pub visit and a "Tiny" Time Trial are definite, as is the Microswap folding/small wheel cycle jumble and sale. For details on registration, travel, hotels and scheduling, check www.trophybikes.com or email [email protected].

  • 'Buzz Starkbier' informs me of sad news:

Jack Lauterwasser, well known in Moulton circles, died on Thursday last week aged 97.

Jack Lauterwasser was born in London in 1904. He was a medal winning cyclist in the 1928 Olympics. He worked for a number of cycle manufacturers including Raleigh. He also was employed in later years by Dr. Alex Moulton, building the Moulton small-wheeled bicycles. He built wheels for the Alex Moulton bikes up into his ninetys. There is an interview video about this remarkable man available from Tony Hadland:

  • Thanks for the inclusion of the Byke Kultuur link.

Had a look at the trophybikes site and was suitably impressed...

The write-up of the British Bike Weekend sounds a lot of fun. Sort of British in a cheerio pip-pip sort of way. Very tongue in cheek.

And the British Bike Pub Flit sounds pretty much like the ideal cycling event, "3-speeds, 3 pubs, 3 hours."

I'm not so sure about the 3-speeds but otherwise it sounds a lot like a Spokesfest event.

  • So how come ther's nothing here about cakes?

  • From: Roger the Hilldodger (@cyclemagic(cake division)) on 12 February 2003
  • Cake, now we’re talking. Today I’ve mainly been eating Blackcurrant Bakewell Tarts – although some would argue they’re not actually cakes. Jolly nice, but no good for dunking.

  • Sad news about Jack. Apparently there will be something in the way of a tribute @ the London Moulton ride. Perhaps Tony Hadland could submit a brief biog to VV? Jack deserves wider recognition for his work and remarkable life. Condolences to his many friends and relatives.

  • Favourite cake at the moment is, "Kelloggs Nutrigrain Elevenses," the raisin ones with loads of cinammon.

    Very yummy.

  • On the Alex Moulton Eweboage there is an obituary on Jack Lauterwasser.
