Patterson's bike handling book now on the webProfessor Bill Patterson of CALPOLY has developed equations that describe cycle handling and can be excellent design aids for the builders of unconventional bikes. Now, parts of his latest third edition are also available on the web. Bill Patterson's book is derived from the course notes of a class he teaches, 'Single Track Vehicle Design'. He puts bike handling through a rigorous mathematical treatment, using analysis similar to that used for aircraft flight - there are a lot of similarities. In this way, it's possible to determine just how a particular geometry (head angles, wheelbase etc) will behave, without, as has been the case before, having to build a bike and try it. This is particularly helpful for those building machines which can't benefit from years of experience, such as recumbents or unusual load-bikes. Recent examples of commercial bikes developed using the Patterson method include the BikeE tandem and NX models. According to Bill, "I have just finished the 3rd edition of the bike design text. A helpful student has placed the most interesting portions on my web page. If you have one of the first editions, you might want to go to the page and down load the files. They are in both .doc and .html format. They may need a little editing after download. Please check out http://www.calpoly.edu/~wpatters/lords.html We have built nearly 300 bikes using the theory outlined in 'Wave 2'. It may be the useful tool we need. Only time will tell. Your feed back is requested. I'm sorry that the shipping and handling to Europe and Australia have gone up. The book is heavier now and the post office has raised its rates. Bill Patterson Assoc. Prof. Mechanical Engineering [email protected] http://www.calpoly.edu/~wpatters/" The paper version is still very much available, and recommeded strongly. The parts on the web are just updates - you need the full text, too. To order "The Lords of the Chainring" (third edition) contact Bill directly. Send 44 dollars plus 2.50 dollars for shipping in North America, and elsewhere 9.50 dollars for air, or 4.50 dollars for surface delivery.
