New Shimano stuff...

Latest info shows, amongst other things, a very intelligent redesign for the rear derailleur attachment...

Although some of the info was meant to be embargoed until a bit later on, leaks on the internet means that news of some of Shimano's 2004 stuff is available now. See for example Singletrack Magazine's coverage:

While intended for an MTB audience with, perhaps, not too much in common with VV readers, what particularly caught my eye was the way that the rear derailleur now attaches onto an extended rear hub axle. Nice idea - should be much stronger and less likely to get bent than a derailleur hanger. Not sure what the implications are for rear wheel removal...

  • Hmm. The Saint is ugly as Sin ;-)

Not sure about the derailleur idea - mechs are always rather delicate by their very nature, which is why lots of downhillers use Rohloff hub gears - and they're still quick-release.

  • The idea of attaching the rear derailleur to the end of the axle is Very Silly Indeed. What does one do when one has a puncture (apart from drag the chain through the dirt, that is)?

  • It's designed for downhill MTBers! What one does when one has a puncture is one gives it to one's team mechanic to sort out... ;-)

  • Didn't we used to do that in the 'bad old days' with cheap Shinamo mechs on cheap frames without rear mech hangers?

  • Just what I was thinking, Rob. What a silly idea to fit an off-roader with a derailleur anyway. What hext, are Land Rover owners going to leave the oil pan off their gearboxes and just rely on slapping claggy oil on the cogs? Gears? Chains? Beakes? Enclose, Enclose, Enclose!
