April roundup
Sheldon's latest April Fool, updates on various events including the Ecotrip, CycleVision and London HPV racing this Sunday, and my continuing struggle with broadband...
- First, enjoy this, sent by Sheldon Brown of Harris Cyclery to various mailing lists:
*********** From: Sheldon Brown Subject: [hpv] Product W--The ultimate performance enhancement drug!
ShelBroCo is proud to announce the release of Product W, the indispensable performance aid for cyclists, runners, chess players and other endurance athletes!
If you don't have Product W, you don't have a chance!
See: http://sheldonbrown.com/w.html

If you haven't checked out his 'humor' page by the way, do so now: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/humor/index.html.
- The Ecotrip in the Netherlands has been booked up for ages (there's a waiting list!) but the latest event newsletter may be of interest for the curious: http://ecotrip.info/newsletter/2.htm.
- Stuart Dennison of Bikefix reminds us:
**** Sorry to bother you all with another email, but for the good of the sport I thought it was worth reminding everybody that Sunday is the first of our London Plus races at Herne Hill Stadium. Starting 2pm. Please help make sure as many people know as possible. Details of this and future events at http://www.bikefix.co.uk/hpv_racing.html. Note that we have changed the date of the second event to avoid a clash with Thruxton. ****
- CycleVision update: from the CycleVision organisers comes this reminder:
**** Lelystad, March 2003
On May 31st and June 1st the spectacular recumbent cycling event "Cycle Vision" will take place on the RDW-track in Lelystad. Recumbent riding (recumbing) is fun, sporty and healthy. Serious coverage on Dutch television last year has put recumbing firmly in the picture.
Cycle Vision 2003 will be at least as great. On various trial tracks there will be ample opportunity to try for yourself every type of recumbent: a fast low-racer, a comfy tourer or a All Terrain Recumbent. Or try the fully faired trikes, amazingly fast and smooth riding. Kids will have their own opportunity to try out recumbing.
An exiting lecture programme and all manufacturers and suppliers can be found in a comprehensive exhibition.
A full racing programme gives a magnificent view on all these bikes in full action. However, beware! You might be tempted to join! The here mentioned programme points are just a few from a real total-programme, which you can find on www.ligfiets.net/cyclevision (click on the flag of choice for your language). You will agree, worth a trip!
- Meanwhile, apologies to all for slow replies to email and lack of web stories. After British Telecom ripped out the ISDN lines on Friday to switch the Velo Vision office over to broadband ADSL, they somehow messed up and (many hours of phone calls later) finally activated the account this morning - in the meantime I was using a single phone line for voice calls and slow old modem for dial-up internet access. The changeover means we lose the fax line, as noted on the front page.
Now it's finally working but it turns out that they won't let me use my [email protected] address for outgoing mail via their SMTP server - so unless I find a way around it I may be stuck with my mail appearing to come from [email protected]. Incoming email to [email protected] and [email protected] won't be affected.

I'd been wondering how Sheldon Brown was going to better his Carrababy spoof. Pity he didn't. |

Also, I notice that the HPV World Championships in Friedrichshafen, Germany, now have a web page up:

Only in German so far... |

I'm already planning a pirate British version of Sheldon's wonder product. Mine won't have the little 'w' on them, and will come in a handy tube shaped container... |

I just had a look at the website. Yes they should also have at least an Englich version of the attendence details. I have mailed them about this, and hope they will at least have the membershipform made available in English. BTW the Eurobike Bikeexpo is also during this and they do have an English version of their webpage.

Try using: smtp.btclick.com as the outgoing server instead of whatever they've told you to use.
For reference, for anyone else considering broadband, DO NOT use BT.

Thanks Murph - that seems to have done it for now at least. A few possible solutions (e.g. sending SMTP mail direct using MX records, rather than via the ISP relay) and your suggestion came to light as I grappled with it yesterday - the BT Openwoe website forums are full of people with the same prob as it turns out. There's also a page at: http://www.btconnect.com/maildomain which apparently lets you send mail from domains which are registered to you... but haven't seen any results after filling it in.
Only went with BT because they were the only people who would convert my existing ISDN connection to ADSL (for free, as it happens). I'll probably move back to Demon when the contract permits - they've always been pretty reliable in my experience. |
From: murph ([email protected]) on 04 April 2003 |
Ok, I can see that avoiding the conversion charge (ISDN->Analogue) is a good idea! Otherwise... |

distracted for but a moment I found I'd wandered, quite by chance, from a cycling page to some strange place about computers, I think.
SMTP? I think I know what SM stands for. |
From: R (R) on 08 April 2003 |
SMTP - does the TP stand for thermal pajamas? That obvious requirement for British spring-time cycle camping? |
From: S. (etc) on 09 April 2003 |
Easter in the Scottish Borders after Bike Right 8 1/2.
Thermal pants sounds like a good ides. |
