bicycle the band seek roadies for new tour

Kurt Liebert's rock band 'bicycle' (no, they don't like capital letters) is setting off on a new tour in May, the "Utopian 660". Roadies who want to join them get an Airborne frame - but also plenty of hard work....

According to their very comprehensive website, www.bicycletheband.com, "Since the summer of 1995, Kurt Liebert and his various bands of bicycle have pedaled over 9,000 miles, played hundreds of gigs, recorded an EP at Prince's Paisley Park Studios, released four independently produced CD's, been chased by cougars up in Canada, signed a record deal with Capricorn Records and camped in every Yogi Bear campground from Seattle to Baltimore."

Yes, this is a band who transport all of their gear between gigs by bike.

bicycle - on the road

"During the summer of 2001 they're doing it all again. On Friday, May 18th, 2001 bicycle will depart Portland, ME and attempt to pedal to New York City to arrive on June 2nd, 2001 on a tour dubbed The Utopian 660."

There are several ways that you can join one of bicycle's tours, and it all adds up to a very interesting business model.

The only employeees along on the trip are 'roadies', who receive a free Airborne bike and B.O.B. trailer each - theirs to keep. They also work - keeping the website updated, setting up gigs, doing publicity and more. Potential Roadies have to buy an application from for 15 dollars, and are then chosen through an essay contest.

The second 'level is 'Riders, who for $650.00 receive 3 meals a day, hotel/hostel and camping expenses, free admission to all the gigs and road support along the way. Again, Riders also have to by an application form.

"And lastly, Groupies are welcome to make their own traveling arrangements. And, although bicycle will not support Groupies in any way the band will mail instructions on camping, lodging, and eating with the purchase of an application."

So, neat idea. Check out the Utopian 660 page for more.
