April roundup 2

Another monster roundup including: Byke Kultuur Never 17 is out, Campag's electronic gear-shifting (perhaps), testimonials page update, DIY mudguards and a Bike Ecology Centre in Malaysia, an exciting new recumbent trike from Thorax, HPV T-Shirt competition at SPEZI, amputee cycle couriers in Afghanistan, and a Yorkshire Dales Bike Bus service...

  • Seamus King's latest not-so-spoof-now online magazine Byke Kultuur Never reaches its 17th edition - but thanks to some hosting problems there's three possible places you could try to get it:

  • Bikebiz had a note pointing out this site, which seems to suggest that Campag will shortly be coming out with another (alongside the existing MAVIC) electronic gear-shift system: http://www.cyclingnews.com/tech.php?id=tech/2003/features/campy_elec

  • I've added some of the comments received from readers on the questionnaires sent out with Issue 8 to the Velo Vision website's testimonials page.

  • Thanks to Jason Patient for this link to Ken Peterson's page about DIY mudguards:

    http://www.halcyon.com/peterson/FendForYourself.html

And for this link to a 'Bicycle Ecology Centre' in Malaysia - one to follow up for the magazine methinks:

  • German manufacturers of recumbent trikes, Thorax have come out with an interesting-looking new model, the Easyrider:

The upright position and 'steering-wheel' type approach make this trike look instantly very appealing for riders who don't wish to look too unconventional. It also has suspension at the rear, and for transport or storage the seat can be removed and the suspension swing under. There's no word on price as yet, and it's only expected to be available from August this year. Apparently they're now aware of the name conflict with Cannondale. Thorax do have an agent in the UK, Specialbikes, but they have no details of the new model as yet. Thanks to Keijo Kansonen for the tip.

  • Thanks to Hanno Hirsch for this:

HPV Germany proudly announces the funny HPV-T-shirt contest at the Germersheim SPEZI fair. With this contest the German HPV associacion continues its now for one year longlasting tradition of HPV contests at the SPEZI fair in Germersheim. Object of this contest is to find out the one who wears the funniest T-Shirt with any HPV content. Contestants are asked to come to the Gallery of the Germersheim City Hall, where the SPEZI HPV fair takes place (same place as the folding recumbent design contest last year) on Saturday, 26th of April at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. Sorry to post this announcement so late, but we made this thing up so late. Looking forward to see you again in Germersheim.

  • Can't remember where I spotted this, probably at messengers.org: a story about the amputee cycle couriers of Afghanistan: http://www.1upinfo.com/news/nov2002/13720.html.

  • This one may be of rather local interest, but looks like a deserving cause and he did ask nicely for some free publicity :-)

The Dales Bike Bus service will be operating again in summer 2003, following its successful launch last year. The route has been altered this year, to provide a more direct service from Wakefield, Leeds and Ilkley to the Dales. This year the service is extended beyond Grassington to Kettlewell in Upper Wharfedale, and a new service will link Kettlewell with Malham.

The Dales Bike Bus service, operated by Arriva Yorkshire, will operate on Sundays and Bank Holidays from 25th May until 31st August 2003.

The bus tows a specially designed cycle carrying trailer that can carry up to 24 bikes. The driving team will assist you to load and unload your bike and secure it in place. Once your bike is on the trailer you just join the bus and pay your fare (including a small supplement for your bike) and relax. Two routes will operate:
    • 810 Wakefield - Leeds - Otley - Ilkley - Bolton Abbey - Grassington - Kettlewell
    • 820 Kettlewell - Grassington - Malham

For full details of this service, and other bus services in the Yorkshire Dales, see www.dalesbus.org

    • Thanks for the three BKN 17 links Pete.
Don't know what I'll do for the next one, possibly not bothering most immediatley comes to mind.

Liked the Testimonials bit too, especially, "Too many letters by Seamus D King," though for a moment I read it as, "Too many letters," Seamus D King.

The Thorax Easyrider looks rather neat.

    • The diy mudguards look just like something that Mr Patient would have on one of his own bikes, perhaps his Hammerited Mercian.

Perhaps in the magazine but definitely on this website there is far too much from Mr Seamus D King.
