Frasier goes cycling on UK TV tonight
Tune in to Channel 4 at 10:35 PM tonight (Monday 14th April)...
BikeBiz points out that a cycling episode of the US comedy show Frasier is due to hit UK screens tonight. As BikeBiz reports:
Although the episode is entitled 'Fraternal Schwinns', the hit TV programme is to feature Kelsey Grammer riding a Cannondale Road Warrior. Pressured into participating in the annual radio station bike-a-thon, Frasier must confront one of his childhood demons and learn to ride a bike, says NBC.com. Volunteered by Daphne, an equally apprehensive Niles joins his brother as the two head-docs "take off their training wheels on the road to cycling glory.
Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) autographed both the bike and the show's script for a charity auction to be run by Bicycling and Mountain Bike magazines to benefit the Bikes Belong Coalition at the Sea Otter Classic.

Mmm, I watched it last night and was a little disappointed if not surprised - lowlights include the bicycle being referred to as a 'child's toy', and, at the end of the episode, Frasier chucking his bike into a waste bin in a 'good riddance' sort of way. Still, we could hardly have expected a serious treatment of cycling as a transport option, could we...
Other recent media appearances I've spotted:
- the Jackie Chan film 'Who am I?' was on UK TV a couple of days ago - features him riding a recumbent briefly.
- Radio 4's The Archers has a cycling storyline - Nigel is on two wheels and campaigning for cycle paths after being banned for drink-driving.
Any more? |

you ought to get out more, Peter. Especially in this nice weather. Yes the Frasier episode was a bit pathetic. I liked their self-conscious efforts to fit in at the 'sporting goods store' (surely Seattle has some bike shops?). A muscular cyclist passes by..Frasier (loudly); "Metal spokes, and a torque chain, now that's good ridin'!" Niles; "Wow, that was GOOD, where did you learn that?" Just hang around in a Halfords if you think that's an exaggeration. |

The way Kelsey Grammer was able to pretend not to be able to ride a bike at all filled me with admiration. Even people who _really_ can't ride a bike do better than that.
OTOH the few minutes of the show I saw made me cringe even more than usual, and brought forth my usual exclamation of "foreign cr*p which accompanies most US TV programmes shown here (apart from Star Trek, the Simpsons and King of the Hill).
I should get out more. |

Stargate-SG1 is the best US import even though cycling has never featured in it.
What recumbent did Mr Chan ride in,"Who am I?" Will clever clogs whassisname Shamouse tell us? |

The Best apearance on a TV series was the Alfrede-Cycle on Batman. It was a F-frame Moulton, it was Gray, and it had a brakelever that detached and then was useable as a Phonehandset. |

I'd never previously considered "cycling" and "acting" to be interchangeable verbs...
Seriously though, Frasier is a comedy show. It's not a serious look at how to be an radio "therapist", hence it's possibly not a total shock that it didn't feature a serious appraisal of cycling as a transport solution! |

I missed Frasier, but this household is currently despairing over Nigel's cycling exploits in the Archers. Typical that the cycling storyline should be allocated to the buffoon character, as a second best to driving, and that everyone should then make fun of his helmet and that he should get scared by a close shave with a lorry at a roundabout. And all he can say on the positive side is that he's noticing more flowers. No mention of increased fitness, decreased stress, traffic beating or anything that hardened city folk might really pick up on. I only listen 'coz my surname is Archer. Honest. I could give up anytime... |

Nigel is *not* "the buffoon character" in the Archers: he's proved time and again to be a thoroughly good and worthwhile egg. No, the main Comedy Relief is Linda Snell (though of course she, ummm, rides a bike...). At least Bert hasn't written a poem about cycling yet, so there is hope. |

OK, maybe buffoon was a bit strong. But unfortunately being a thoroughly good egg in a soap/long running drama is often not the way to get the attention of the public. Perhaps Brian should take up cycling on a bad saddle - penile numbness would solve most of his problems. As for Bert's 'poetry'..... Ugh. |
