The 2003 show season hots up...
The Bike Show at the NEC in Birmingham is on this weekend - and the Velo Vision stand will be looking for helpers. We're also looking for reporters from the SPEZI Special Bike Show in Germersheim, on this same weekend...
It's most unfortunate that the two events - The Bike Show and the SPEZI clash. Normally the SPEZI is unmissable - it's the premier special bike show in Europe. But unfortunately I'd already booked the Bike Show stand some time before I realised the SPEZI dates...
SPEZI - Saturday and Sunday, 26-27th April
I already have some wonderful volunteers who will kindly send back reports on the SPEZI, but more are always welcome. If you're going along with a camera, and can get some details and nice pictures of anything new and interesting at the show, please do send it in. All contributions will be acknowledged and I'll also send out free copies of the magazine to anyone whose material I use. We now have high-speed internet - so feel free to email images at full size. The more pixels the better! See previous show reports in the magazine for an idea of the sort of thing we're after. If it's not too cheeky, maybe I could point potential reporters to my photo hints document? - download here (RTF file, 44k). Thanks in advance!
The Bike Show - Friday to Sunday, 25-27 April
This show, held at the NEC in Birmingham, has recently been taken over by Haymarket Exhibitions, who promise that it won't be as noisy/jumpy/BMXy as previous years when it was run by Future Publishing. Exhibitors include recumbent trike makers ICE and the very exciting child's recumbent, the KMX Kart. And of course Velo Vision...
As it's likely to be just me (Peter Eland) running the stand, as ever I'll be most grateful if any brave readers at the show would mind watching the stand for a little to give me a few short 'comfort' breaks. As a thank-you I'd refund your entrance money...
I'm particularly looking for someone to cover for me 11:30-12:10 on Saturday the 26th April when I'm due to be giving a talk in the 'Spokes Room'. Please email if you might be able to help - much obliged.

Collaborations? Promise us the next issue of VV won't be three quarters full of trains ,rolling-stock specifications, timetables, ticketing information, and a little bit about Bromptons squeezed in at the end.... |

I really shouldn't have mentioned it!
We're thinking not about content, but more about sharing promotion/show stand costs - in the UK and abroad. Many readers get both mags anyway, so it makes sense for us to team up to achieve more marketing clout in a joint promotion than either of us could individually. |

Looking at the Bike Show website it still looks far too noisy/jumpy/BMXy for my liking. I look forward to hearing how well you get on with it. |

I've never been to the Bike Show before and I'm newly intersted in cycling in many forms and as such have subscribed to VV. The show was a bit of an anti-climax and way over priced for what was there (my 8 yr old son had to pay full price of £15! - £36 in total for both of us. I guess the show was catering for the BMX/MTB (though less so) where the trends and cash are. There were some interesting items in particular KMX's were very popular trike. Is there show in the UK that caters for a more varied (and dare I say interesting) side of cycling ? |

I don't think there's a show as such - although the autumn one in London might get to be that way.
There are certainly events that are more diverse: these include Spokefest in Leister and Cyclefest in Lancaster.
Then there's any Company of Cyclists roadshow and finally I think the CTC rally in York this year is aim for a generalised celebartion of all things cycling. |

Hmmm...the bike show seemed to cater very obviously for the BMX/ Jump bike fraternity. Rather a disappointment and I can understand why most of the major manufacturers stayed away in their droves. Roll on the London show later this year is all I can say. |

Thanks for the plug Murph. There's a list of out shows this year at companyofcyclists.com, and you'll find some examples of recumbency at each of them, and you're all wecome. but bear in mind that there aren't TOO many examples of VeloVisionesque machines on our tracks, as we have to appeal to newcomers to cycling. You'll find CWLB recumbent bikes and a trike or two, though. |
