An HPV hotbed in Hong Kong

Hong Kong has a flourishing HPV racing scene, as subscribers to the HPV mailing list discovered recently. Simon Boyde of the HKHPVA described their activities in response to a query on the list.

Hong Kong Human Powered Vehicle Association (HKHPVA) is, at present, mostly concerned with pedal kart racing. As Simon explained, this activity differs consideably from most HPV racing events: the vehicles are four-wheelers, and the races are 'Le Mans'-type endurance events with regular pedaller changes.

Simon believes that the four-wheel rule was originally intended to make the sport more sponsorship-friendly: "The big race we organise raises an average of USD150,000 per year, for example. Four wheels looks more familiar to an unsuspecting public than 2 or 3, despite the obvious speed penalties incurred, and they are therefore more likely to sponsor them."

Pedal kart (also known as pedal car) races are popular in several countries across the world. There is now an attempt to unify the rules so that an internationsl pedal car association can be set up, and eventually a world championship event may be organised. HKHPVA are keeping a close eye on these developments.

This is typical of Hong Kong. Friends of the Earth HK organise elaborately advertised 'solar car races', for which they get sponsorship from environmentally friendly sources such as Shell! Yet FoE do not even mention, let alone advocate or support in any way bicycling in Hong Kong.
