Time trip

A fascinating website for a cycle tour across the generation gap...

The site at:

http://www.voyagevoyage.com/

describes how "In 1953 Roy Jenkin, a 21 year-old student from Exeter, cycled around France, Switzerland and Germany with his schoolfriend Gordon Newbery. They covered 2,286 miles, slept in potting sheds, hay barns, and even a railway marshalling yard, and the whole trip cost them £24 15s. His diary and this website, describes the long-gone Europe of horse carts, cobbles and old fashioned hospitality, a continent which was still recovering from six years of war."

The entire diary of this trip is online, together with many great black-and-white historic photos - well worth the visit.

The site is set up by Roy's daughter Nina, who is now planning to recreate the journey herself.

Thanks to 'Huw' for the link.

  • This is a great site. It's interesting to see places I know in Drome and Isere as they were when I was three!

  • Lovely site.
Nice to remember that people were so "Straight and almost formal" in the days before the Yoof of today (innit!) arrived.

  • A wonderful site - will recommend it highly to others. Fascinating to see France as it was when I was 9! One thing missing - cars - wasn't that wonderful, even in Paris it seems !
