When marketing and bikes mix

Recumbent trikes in a car mag, and subversive advertising of beer via cycle couriers and bike polo...

The first of two interesting links comes from Syd Winer: not very remarkable in itself, but well done to WizWheelz for placing this puff piece for their TerraTrike recumbent trike in a bastion of automotive culture:

This trike is a fine affordable US-made machine - arguably, as probably the biggest-selling tadpole trike in the US, it should have really been in the Buyer's Guide in Issue 9...

The second link is from the courier site messengers.org and is the text of a NY Times article, presumably from the business section. It tells how Pabst Blue Ribbon beer managed, on a minimal budget, to become established as the beverage of choice for 'alternative people' - with cycle couriers prominent amongst them. Certainly some interesting observations about US corporate culture and marketing - and Bike Polo gets a mention too!:

  • The beer promotion piece should be downloaded and used by couriwer firms to persuade potential sponsors. York's original courier firm, Cyclone, advertise the city's Caffe Nero on their backpacks, thus giving the impression that this is the cool place where cool peopole hang out. Loadbikes of York now do a similar thing with a Cafe-Bar, but having no desire to be seen as 'cool' I think I'll approach Betty's Tea Rooms for a promo deal. I could do my patrol on a Raleigh Superbe wearing tweeds.

  • ... and carrying a few china cups in a front basket would give just the right rattle to make everyone think of tea.

  • Over those cobbles outside Betty's?
T'other guy last week was right though - you really should be in marketing. E-mail any brilliant ideas for BikeRescue to my address why don't you?

  • Aha! Sue, you could run that tricycling elephant that you want to put in the CoC fleet on the Betty's teacakes Andy can pay you in for the marketing ideas. Now where can I find a Leyland Leopard? Apologies to those not in the York Chainlink Mafia, who won't know what the hell I'm talking about...
