Build your own recumbent - the wooden way
How to get yourself a low racer from wood offcuts and a few bits of aluminium...
John Jermy of Xntrick Cycles informs me that he's just finished building a lowish '2x4' recumbent to plans by James Robinson.
Check out http://2x4.xntrick.co.uk/ for a step-by step description of how it was done - might be some useful ideas in there for anyone building bikes (or trailers) in wood. Of course, John did have the advantage of access to a CNC router...

Great. If it turns cold of an evening at Spokesfest we'll have a good bit of wood to burn. |
From: Steven Brandist (email) on 08 July 2003 |
I hope thats FSC approved wood you've used there Jezza. |

The mahogany inlay probably wasn't but all apart from the plywood is reclaimed timber, i.e. saved from going to landfill.
The CNC machine was only used to do the inlay, most of the cutting was done on a bandsaw which gave enough accuracy for me to spot a 1 degree error on James's plans because of the gap!
It should be at Spokesfest and may even race (BHPC) if I can keep it away from that pyomaniac Seamus. John J XnTRICK Cycles |

looks good, John. Only the one headset this time? That's a bit conventional for you isn't it? |

actually, that Screaming Jelly Babies mixture would work just as well on wood;-)
For a prank, you could bring some charred lumps of wood, a couple of rusty tyres, chainset and chain and after everyone had admired your wooden bike overnight replace it with the above props and pretend it'd be inceinerated. |

When can we expect a wobble-lowrider version? :-) |

Speaking of Spokesfest John, (why I think your name was Jeremy earlier?)... anyway, I'll be manning the Leicester Spokes Try-out on the Sunday in Abbey Park. Look forward to meeting you all then. I'll also have application forms for a new group in honour of a great man, sadly not that well known in cycling circles 'The Roger the Hilldodger Appreciation Society', AKA 'Lovell Lovers'. |

"not that well known in cycling circles" Has he not mastered corners on his new penny then?

"When can we expect a wobble-lowrider version? :-)" Anthony - I thought you would be asking for a 4 wheeled version!.............. Bugg*r, another idea to add to the endless "to do" list. |

How about a Simon Thomas Lack of Appretiation Society?
There are two on the team afterall. |

The Much Maligned Mr McGurn has the lack of appreciation society market cornered surely? |

I'll be wearing the new Roger the Hilldodger tee shirt and taking orders for the same. Only £15 |
From: Steven Brandist ([email protected]) on 11 July 2003 |
£15 each - the cheek! I'd want at least £20 to make me to wear something like that.
I did think about a Society for Simon as well. But I view him as a faithful ignored sidekick, just like that cat was to Hong Kong Phooey (sing along: #1 superguy - ha!) |
From: RtH (@cyclemagic) on 12 July 2003 |
He'll like being compared to a cat. |
From: Seamus ([email protected]) on 12 July 2003 |
£15? Pah! That's nowt. Bargain compared to the Cycling Plus shirt, tee-hee!
I suppose that's lost on those who don't use the C+ bulletin board. |
From: Steven Brandist (email) on 13 July 2003 |
Simon will probably like being compared to the cat. If I remember rightly the cat was the intelligent one who actually did all the work. Hong Kong Phooey was just the hot air of the outfit. |
From: Seamustuffed ([email protected]) on 14 July 2003 |
Hong Kong Phooey, number one super guy. Hong Kong Phooey, quicker than the human eye. He's got style, a groovy style and a car that just won't stop. When the going gets rough, he's super tough, with a Hong Kong Phooey chop (Hee-ya!) Hong Kong Phooey, number one super guy. Hong Kong Phooey, quicker than the human eye. Hong Kong Phooey, he's fan-riffic! |

So you're back on the beer again Seamus? |
