Off to Spokesfest

..and what's up with the website

I'll be heading off to Spokesfest in Leicester in a few hours - see the previous story about this event. Looks like it might be a tad damp... back in action on Monday.

Thanks for bearing with us through the recent website updates. We didn't think it would be quite as disruptive...

Changes so far include

- moving to a more expensive (and we do hope it'll be better, too!) hosting package with UKLinux. This also gets us full server log access so we can determine visitor statistics far better than we could before.

- the new small ads system is in place - it looks better, but more importantly for me is much easier to administer

- changes to the story display routine so that they're deep-linkable from external sites, and also display the website navigation links.

Still to come

- Getting rid of the nasty frames-based forwarding system from velovision.co.uk to UKLinux

- improvements to the online shop, including some new things for sale... of which more later.

- improvements to the 'comments' system

- Eventually, improvements to the 'older stories' archive system.

Apologies again for recent temporary outages and problems. We'll do our best to minimise these from now on.

  • Hopefully I'll get the story archive stuff sorted over the weekend. Don't be surprised if it becomes unavailable for certain periods of time.

As for the rest, most of the additional coding has been done so disruption should be fairly minimal but again, don't be surprised if certain bits and bobs become temporarily unavailable.

  • The sun came out as soon as Pete arrived :-)

  • Funny - about the time Pete was probably leaving York the rain was coming down by the bucketful. Looks like his infuriatingly sunny disposition precedes him :-)

  • NEW PENNY STACK RECORD! 131!

  • Went over to Spokefest and it was very enjoyable. The Penny Stack was quite a sight! Didn't see Peter - where were you? Did however see the real Roger the Hill Dodger and he does really exist! Even photographed him talking to the TV crew.
Thanks to Leicester Spokes for a great day, just a bit spread out and sure I might have missed somethings.

  • Spokesfest was organised by Cyclemagic and Abbey Pumping Station.

  • Sorry Roger - thanks then to Cyclemagic and the Pumping Station! Whoever organised it was a great day which I enjoyed along with my youngest son.

  • It is a bit confusing with Leicester Spokes and Spokesfest having similar names but separate organisations.

Other people getting credit is the way it goes Roger, as my little tale shows. On the Sunday morning as I was putting up the signs on all the entrances (as requested) and an old chap on a bike hailed me as he entered the park, "he said he was going to up put a map of events" he said looking at the worded sign. "Oh, I'm sure you'll find everything, the parks not that big" I said. "You don't need to tell me about this park, I've been coming here since I was knee high to a grasshopper... and anyway I know whats going on I'M AN ORGANISER", he said. I won't repeat the phrase I that came into my head.

  • Suggestion here, put the Add a Comment bit at the bottom of the comments instead of the top 'cos after reading through the comments is when you'd be most likely to have a comment to add and it's burdensome scrolling back to the top of them.

  • Thanks Seamus - Simon's already working on doing just that :-)

  • From: Simon Ward ([email protected]) on 31 July 2003
  • Simon has, in fact, done it (see below)

  • I'm on the ferry now, parked up at Hull.
Met a bloke from Newcastle yesterday who rode a Pashley PDQ and before that a unicycle with his brother. He was most impressed when I said his brother's name was Duncan Castling.

On ferry are two more liegfiets; and M5 Blueglide (want) and Challenge Focus.
