First day's racing at Battle Mountain - results inWhittingham's Varna is fastest so far, at 75-odd mph... The World Human Powered Speed Challenge 2003 kicked off on Monday. It's held at a superbly flat and straight course at Battle Mountain, Nevada, and was the occasion of the flying 200m human-powered record speed of 81 mph, set last year by the Varna speedbike ridden by Sam Whittingham. The first day of racing saw Sam reach 75mph, with Thom Ollinger in the Coslinger Special next best at a shade under 60mph. Windy conditions disrupted many other runs.
